On September 21, Red Bull took over Long Beach's Rainbow Harbor for the 2013 Flugtag. The fifth of five events that took place across the United States this year saw 28 teams step up on stage before a crowd of over 110,000 and perform a 30-second performances before sending their homemade gliders constructed of duct tape, PVC piping, cellophane, and whatever other materials they had available off the pier and into the cold waters 30 feet below.
Featuring a celebrity of panel of judges that included late-night talk show host Carson Daly, professional motorbike stunt rider Robbie Maddison and the cast of Comedy Central's 'Workaholics,' Flugtag teams were judged on three criteria: distance, creativity and showmanship.
Team The Chicken Whisperers, of San Francisco, California, were the big winners of the day, taking home first place. They dazzled the crowd with a creative dance while dressed in chicken getups before sending their glider off into the air where it flew 258 feet before splashing down. Not only did they take home this year's first place award but they also set a new world record, shattering the previous world record of 226 feet set by a German team the year before.
Second place award went to team Legendary Flying Machine of Long Beach whose craft went 108 feet, while third place went to the Oakley Factory Pilots of Foothill Ranch and their hooptie, which went 60 feet. The People's Choice award was given to team Red, White, and Brew! of Reedley and their American-themed Bald Eagle glider.
For a grand finale, the winners of the Fly With Workaholics Contest, Team Sealow Green of Boulder, Colorado took their place on the pier and performed a Wizard-themed skit before pushing their winning design, a dragon mounted on top of a 1985 Volvo modeled after the Anders Holm character's car, off the pier.
It wasn't car related (unless you count the 'cars' pushed into the harbor) but a brilliant showing all the same - big ups to Red Bull Flugtag on reaching 21 years of age! Check out our gallery for a photographic flashback to Saturday and our first ever Red Bull Flugtag.
