Toyo Tires Treadpass SEMA 2013

A car show displaying a build for every walk of life

Sean Russell
Nov 18, 2013

The Toyo Tires Treadpass car show was a cornucopia of modified automobiles: Liberty Walk widebodies, a slammed minivan, classic Skyline, big-budget Euros, jacked-up trucks and hi-fi compacts. Located in the connecting passage between the Central and South Halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center, the outdoor display was a well-placed reprieve from the sea of brand booths within the big show. A charging station and Speed Energy Drink sampling bar placed dead center also added to the display. Batteries charged and eyes-wide, we took the liberty of photographing each of the display cars for those that may have missed the show.

Nissan GT-R builds made big news at SEMA 2013. Liberty Walk and R’s Tuning may have stole the show on the modern front but this classic JDM 1974 Nissan Skyline 2000 GTX reminded us of the Japanese supercar’s roots. There is no arguing with heritage. Felix Marcelino, vehicle owner and F/Zero2 clothing brand co-owner says, "I'm not a diehard classic car guy but new cars are just too heavy. I just don't feel like you're doing the driving with new GT-Rs."

Major mods include: fender flares; trunk spoiler; front chin; Magnaflow exhaust; custom GTS seats; Alpine and MB Quart audio; Tech Toy Tuning coilovers and Fatlace X AME F/Zero1 wheels. It still also utilizes the original L20 engine.

2013 Subaru BRZ – LFA Yellow

In a sea of Scions, this BRZ grabbed our attention for more than just the sunshine shade. The wide racecar stance is a bit deceiving, as the motor does not feature any heavy modification. But the groundwork has been laid with upgrades to the aero, suspension and crash safety components. What do you think of this Varis kit?

Major mods include: Varis widebody kit; Voltex Type 1S GT spoiler; LFA yellow paint; Stack dash guage cluster; GTSpec carbon fiber trim, under chassis reinforcement braces and seat rails brace; Essex roll bar; Takata harness; Bride Stradia II seats; KW club sport 2-way coilovers; 19x9.5” and 19x10.5” Advan GT forged wheels; 235/35ZR19 front and 265/30ZR19 rear Toyo Proxes R888 tires.

2012 Nissan Quest – Fatlace

Every man dreads the day when wife requires a minivan. The truth is though, vans in general are spacious, comfortable and great for long trips to Vegas with the crew albeit, they lack cool factor. This Quest however breaks that mold with a few key aftermarket additions. Wouldn’t you rather drop off your fourth grader in this?

Major mods include: Nissan JDM El Grand conversion; Air Runner suspension; Accuair Brain; Work Gnosis CV201 wheels; 225/40R19 front and 245/40R19 rear Toyo Proxes 4-Plus tires.

2007 BMW 328xi Wagon - Liberty Walk

This multi-purpose wagon is a work in progress. The adventure-oriented owner has not made any heavy engine upgrades but plans a future BMW drivetrain swap. Adding width to the stance was no easy task though. Outfitting the Liberty Walk widebody kit on this platform required major modifications and over 100 hours of tinkering.

Major mods include: Liberty Walk BMW M3 widebody kit; LTMW M3 body conversion and Alpine White paint; JSP Fab custom exhaust; Heatshield Products exhaust wrap; Rotora 360mm 6-piston front and 350mm 4-piston rear brakes; HRE S107 wheels; Racedesign custom vinyl; KW V3 coilovers; Recaro CS seats; rooftop bike mount; DEI alarm system; 295/30ZR19 front and 325/30ZR19 rear Toyo Proxes R888 tires.

2008 Lamborghini Murcielago – Liberty Walk

You’ve seen this one before. Liberty Walk’s big dog Lambo has been spotted at car shows all over the Californian map this year. It is a fan favorite and for good reason. Few have the means to purchase this car and even less have the stones to modify it.

Major mods include: Liberty Walk widebody kit, Type 2 front bumper, front diffuser, side diffusers, rear bumper, rear diffuser, Version 3 rear wing, headlight trim; IPE exhaust with Liberty Walk exhaust tips; 19x8.5” -12 and 20x12” -63 LB Performance wheels; 235/35ZR19 front and 345/25ZR20 rear Toyo Proxes T1R tires.

2013 Factory Five Racing 818

Here we have a featherweight kit car from a company that has utilized Subaru donor platforms since the beginning. As the world’s largest manufacturer of kit cars, Factory Five has many options for both the street and track. The 818S for instance is for the street and weighs in an est. 1,800 lbs. depending on the donor vehicle – possibly a 2002-2007 WRX or Impreza. The amazing part is the kit comes in around $10,000 plus the donor car. That means you could roll out in an agile performer for under $25,000.

The aftermarket modifications are limitless but in this case included: Koni monotube coilovers; verycoolparts.com interior bits; paint by Wiggin’s Kustumz of Enterprise; XXR 527 wheels in chromium black; 215/45ZR17 front and 255/35ZR18 rear Toyo Proxes R888.

2007 BMW 335 – FFTEC Motorsports

Dusty but still badass, this dark Bimmer featured a widebody upgrade via Liberty Walk. Built to run with the bulls, the upgraded engine bay made it clear that this is no show queen. The dirty windshield and hood was taken advantage of by passing by finger artists though.

2012 Smart 451 - AutoKonexion

When talking urban compact, it does not get much more miniature than the Smart car. This four-wheeled cockpit is all about maneuverability and fuel-economy – drag strip times are better left unsaid. 2013 Lexus LFA – Work Wheels

It’s been said that if you can figure out how to turn on an LFA without instruction then you are qualified to drive it. This Japanese supercar took years of R&D, which resulted in a mega-price tag. The variant you see here is lightly modified but it is modified nonetheless and that is crazy in itself.
