If you post it, they will come. That pretty much summed up one bright and sunny weekend as Source Interlink Media (SIM)—a company that encompasses over 78 publications, 101 websites, and 800 branded products, including Import Tuner, Super Street, Honda Tuning, and Modified magazines—held a car meet and tech day in collaboration with Formula D. Months leading up to the event, SIM launched a flurry of Internet invites and forum blasts to welcome enthusiasts to the second annual Formula D Tech Day at their main headquarters in Irvine, CA. With less than two weeks before FD’s opening season event at the Long Beach Grand Prix, this year’s competitors were given the opportunity to bring their cars to SIM’s state-of-the-art technical facility to ensure their car falls within this year’s new FD rules and regulations. Familiar faces included Toshiki Yoshioka with his brand-new Subaru BRZ, Taka Aono and his AE86 Corolla, and Dean Kearney and his Dodge Viper, which came on a three-car trailer that included 2012 Series Champion Daigo Saito’s Lexus SC430 and Robbie Nishida’s SC300. Other vehicles teching for the day included Mike Essa’s E46 M3, a pair of V-8–powered S13’s, which included Jeff Jones and Joon Maeng, Dennis Mertzanis’ Hyundai Genesis coupe, Carl Rydquist’s 350Z, and a trio of S14’s which belonged to Aurimas “Odi” Bakchis, Dave Briggs, and Jeff Jones.

While the FD staff was busy tech inspecting cars, the main parking lot was jam packed with over 700 cars coming out to the car meet portion of the event. The overwhelming turnout forced staff members to shut down the parking lot’s main point of entry midday through the event in order to maintain order. Many of the early bird attendees took the opportunity to attend the Cars and Coffee meet just a few miles away before caravanning down to the SIM gathering as early as 9 a.m. The main parking lot quickly filled to capacity as the adjacent lots were equally full with caravans of Honda S2000’s, GT-R’s (car count amounting to over $2 million), old-school, VIP-themed and 240SX’s rolled up in style. Euro-style, drift-prepped, road-race built, and domestic-branded cars were aplenty. Food trucks provided their unique cuisines, while import models piqued the crowd’s interest by signing IT calendars and taking photos with fans.

If you missed out on the festivities, be sure to come out next year. We promise to deliver an even bigger and better event.
