What possesses a man to wake up in the wee hours of the morning? If it's not bacon frying in a pan it must be cars. Normally, we wouldn't be in the Irwindale Speedway parking lot unless Formula D Final Fight was underway, but that wasn't the case this past Saturday. For about 15 years now Mooneyes staff have hosted its annual Xmas Party Show & Drag and for the past 7 years Mooneyes has been throwing it at Irwindale Speedway in Irwindale, CA. For those of you clueless to what Mooneyes is we asked Mooneyes' Sales Manager Bob Kriezal for a little history lesson.
"The founder of Mooneyes name was Dean Moon and they started by putting a moon on the side of something. In between the two O's they would paint the eyeballs hence the eyes. So Mooneyes came out of it."
Unfortunately, it was that time of the month for Mother Nature. Winter weather darkened our typical sunny California day. The cloud's burst and steady rain cause many to go home prior to noon. The clouds did begin to break around 1pm and the now wet Show & Drag festivities continued. The drag section of the event was cancelled, nonetheless crowds poured in, patina and waxed hot rods sat displayed and BBQ smoke wafted over enthusiasts that endured the rain.
"The weather put a real dampener on it today. I think we'd have a bit bigger crowd right about now. Considering what the weather is like, it's pretty good. If it rains they can't run the drag racing," says Bob Kriezal.
We know what you're thinking: Why on earth are we featuring hot rods? Why not? Heavy fabrication, restoration and tuning are cornerstones of this heritage driven car culture. We are all tuners that are just trying go fast, look good, or balance both.
