Mooneyes Xmas Party Details:

  • Hot Rod show at Irwindale Speedway, CA
  • Rain decreases attendance
  • Drag portion cancelled on account of weather
  • Vintage VW enthusiasts present

It's 6am on a Saturday morning and rather than being home asleep hundreds of men, women, and children flocked to Irwindale Speedway in Irwindale, CA. for the annual Mooneyes Xmas Party Show and Drag. The noise of V8s, the smell of burning fuel and carne asada filled the air as a line of cars still try to make their way into the venue.

The Mooneyes event gathered a range of hot rods including a range of Volkswagen enthusiasts as well. And not just your ordinary modern Volkswagen, we're talking proper old-school VWs.

You have the Volkswagen Beetle, what's often called the People's Car and probably the most recognizable car known to man. No matter what Volkswagen does to the new Beetle, it can never recreate the magic that the iconic old Beetle communicated. This is what happens when you ask Porsche to design a car.

There's something about vintage VWs that never lose its cool factor especially the Volkswagen Type II or simply called the Volkswagen Bus. The bus gained popularity during the sixties/seventies counterculture movement where it was dubbed the "hippie bus."

Continuing its formula with mid-engine cars, Volkswagen came out with the Type 3. It released a wagon variant given the nickname Squareback, which was introduced to the US in the early 1960s.

Lastly, we have Volkswagen's cousin a Porsche 356. The car was designed by none other than Ferdinand Porsche, the same man responsible for designing the Volkswagen Beetle mentioned above. As you can see the 356 had very similar bodylines as the Beetle. Just like the Beetle its air-cooled engine is also mounted in the rear.

The unusual California weather couldn't stop hundreds of people from attending this year's Mooneyes Xmas show. Sure some of the exteriors of these cars are a bit rough, but who cares? Fresh paint jobs can be overrated. It's cool VWs like these that will make us attend every Mooneye event there is.
