Supras In Vegas Details:
The Toyota Supra is one of those models that will forever have a cult following and the price and value of these cars continue to go up every year as more of them disappear off the road. There are plenty of reasons why people are completely in love with these cars but the one that sums it up is, they were just so damn good from the factory. The basis of every Supra was always an inline-6 engine and first generation Supras even share engine similarities with the holy grail of Toyota performance, the 2000gt. Over the years, each generation of Supra kept getting better and better until Toyota finally stopped making them in 2002. While that may seem like an eternity ago, the Supra has most definitely stood the test of time. Modern day builds can easily reach over the 1000HP mark while cars with relatively few modifications and stock engine internals can see over 500HP at the wheels on a regular basis. Those are some pretty impressive numbers for a car that was built over 10 years ago. It’s no wonder why people who are lucky enough to secure themselves a Supra hold on to them forever.
Which brings us to the 4h annual “Supras in Vegas” #SIV2014. Supras In Vegas is the stuff a Supra owner’s dreams are made of. It’s a two day event, where owners from all around the US caravan to Las Vegas for everything from a show and shine, to a dyno day to full blown quarter mile pulls at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. We didn’t have a chance to meet up with the guys during their dyno day at Cody Phillips Racing but we managed to catch the second day of the event at LVMS. (Las Vegas Motor Speedway)
The day started off hot, and only got hotter, the pit area was packed with over 100 Supras and it sent us into 2JZ overload. As soon as we started walking through the pits, we found ourselves in the middle of every Supra fan-boy’s dream. Frankly, it was too difficult just to focus our attention on one car to take photos because all of them were so rad. Every generation of Supra was represented, from the 80’s classic Celica-Supra to the infamous Mark IV Supra powerhouse, it literally was Supra heaven.
After a brief stint through the pit paddock it was time to turn our attention to the ¼ mile drag strip to see what these cars could do. One of the best things about this event is that not only did the #SIV2014 attendee’s get drag time, but they go to race them against other cars that felt lucky enough to take them on. The drag racing was broken up into 5 main classes. “Supra Stock Turbo, Supra Street, 6-Speed, and our two favorites, Supras vs. The World, and Outlaw.” All the cars in attendance put on an amazing show all night long. Some Supras were lucky enough to even break into the sub 9second times. The sounds of the 1J’s and 2J’s screaming through the burnout box is still resonating in our ears, and we love it. We can’t wait to come back next year to see what these guys have in store.
