R.A.C.E. Cancer Charity Event

Southern California shops, teams, and manufacturers throw one hell of a first

You know those studies that constantly come out showing the health benefits of engaging in an enjoyable pastime—playing an instrument, vacationing, sex, etc.? If you've ever driven a modified import on a racetrack, you'll know its therapeutic benefits. In that regard, could it be argued that someone who organizes track events is giving charitably to the emotional and physical well being of those who attend? We think so - doubly so if that person contributes the proceeds of a track event to an actual charity.

Enter Revo Taccad and R.A.C.E., or "Racers Against Cancer Events". After organizing various import-segment track days for the past few years (like last December's Toyota vs. Honda event at Buttonwillow), a cancer death in his family prompted him and his Team Topak Racing to organize one especially for cancer charities, and thus the first-ever R.A.C.E. event was held in 2014 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., raising over $6K in cancer-charity contributions.

The final tally of this year's contributions (to be donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, along with the family of late SoCal Miata enthusiast Marco Canlas) has yet to be counted, but from where we were shooting, the best appeared to get better this year. Revo's connections within the industry brought out plenty of track heavy hitters. Some of our favorites: Steve Millen's Stillen IMSA Z32, throwing flames around the Auto Club infield; Cusco's time-attack-prepped FR-Ss and EVO X; Massimo Power's EVO IX; Buddy Club's much-faster-than-you'd-expect Honda Fits; Lucky 7 Racing's mean 20B three-rotor-powered FD RX-7; Forged Autosport's STI; the T Sportline #BreastCar Tesla Model S; and the dozens of AE86s and assorted old-school rowdiness from Eight-Six Party Brigade.

Festivities—er, charitable giving—continued off the track in the vendor/show area, with goodies of all makes and models, from crews, shops and manufacturers large and small. Rain came and went, and while that may have deterred the less determined among us, the rest stuck it out to make 2015's R.A.C.E. a worthy successor to the inaugural event.
