A lot of you are probably familiar with the car scenes in Los Angeles in Southern California and the Bay Area in Northern California. But besides the occasional drag racing action at Famoso Raceway near Bakersfield and the Super Lap Battle time attack in Buttonwillow, there isn't much car excitement going on in the central part of Cali. Which is why when we heard our friends Dee from SS Auto Power and Jun from Hardcore Japan were having a show called Cali Invasion at Stockton99 Speedway in Stockton, we had to scratch our heads and open up Google Maps to see where it was.
Think of Cali Invasion as a really grassroots Formula D event. On one side you had a car show handled by Stance Showoff, and on the other tire-shredding tandem drift sessions. Pro driver Matt Field with his 1,000hp Nissan S14 and Jeff Wolfson with his 2JZ-GTE Scion FR-S made a few exhibition runs and even gave a few ride-alongs. With the summer car show season slowing down, this wasn't the event to find any big car debuts, but sure enough there were some solid builds.
It wasn't bad for a first show in the middle of nowhere. Word is organizers are already thinking of expanding to other cities in NorCal and SoCal. It's true hosting a car show isn't easy, but as Cali Invasion proved, with the right amount of passion the rest usually follows.
