The 2016 Formula DRIFT Long Beach season opener was a rather peculiar event. Normally it's set in sunny California weather, but this year fans were met with an on again-off again flow of rain. Also out of the norm was the absence of Fatlace's Offset Kings car show. For this year's edition, Fatlace founder Mark Arcenal and his team went old school, hosting a car meet at the Santa Monica pier, some 15 miles west of downtown Los Angeles, Calif., and 30 miles north of Long Beach the day after Formula D. "Nobody does [car meets] anymore," explains Mark. "It's sort of like our version of Cars and Coffee."
It was no surprise that cars showed up well before the specified starting time. A few of our favorites included Derek Van Ommen's RE Amemiya-inspired Mazda RX-7, as well as Marke Benedicto's Amuse style Honda S2000. You also had the usual suspects show up, like Brendan Taft's NA Toyota Supra, which we featured in our December '15 issue, and JM Yang's Medusa RWB Porsche. The parking lot quickly filled up with enthusiasts and some even got a cool Offset Kings sticker.
"Cars come out of the woodwork when there aren't trophies involved. Real enthusiasts," Mark concluded. You can find the full Offset Kings schedule at Fatlace.com.
