Best of Spocom Hawaii 2017

Checking out what's great in the 808

There's a reason why you'll find us in at Spocom Hawaii every single year. It's not the spam musubi, Mai Tais, or even the beaches. Okay, maybe the beach is a better view than our cubicles, but I digress. Hawaii actually has much more to offer with its ever-evolving car culture.

Hawaiians are very similar to the Japanese in that they take pride in anything and everything they do, and that definitely goes for building cars. They manage to keep up with the current trends and express their own unique 808 style, despite extremely difficult and expensive parts importation.

While you'll find a good mix of cars at Spocom Hawaii, we couldn't help but gravitate towards the old-school builds and awesome '90s JDM cars we all love. While there, we discovered that Hawaii is a virtual 86 gold mine. You also can't ignore the well-executed Honda builds that have always been a staple on the islands. If you want to see local talent, all you have to do is take a look at Justin Whaley's Lexus IS300. He managed to get the Best Engineering Award and we hear he's quite the drifter, too.

Hawaiians have a huge passion for car culture - that we know. You can see it as the level of car building gets better and better every year, and if we're being honest, we don't envy Spocom's car show judges, who have to make some tough decisions. Instead of bearing any real responsibility, we'll just do what we do—admire awesome cars, embrace the culture, sip some Mai Tais, and throw down a spam musubi or two.
