20 Things You Couldn't Miss at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show

There was more to see at the 88th annual Geneva International Motor Show than the new Toyota Supra

Mar 15, 2018

By now you're probably tired of hearing about the Toyota Supra Racing Concept by Gazoo Racing. Okay, we don't blame you; every media outlet and social channel was pumping the shit out of it last week, and all you wanted to hear about was how the production model would actually look, how much power it'll make, when it's coming, and probably most importantly was how much it's going to cost. Toyota tells us we should have more details come spring/summer, but it's safe to say you won't be seeing any A90 Supras on the road until 2019, at the earliest.

With that said, I still had a couple of days at the Geneva International Motor Show to wander around and see what was new. Last week we showcased the Supra the moment the embargo lifted and there's also a story on the Honda Civic Type R TCR here. In addition, I went through my photos and highlighted 20 other interesting cars/booths that'll bring you up to speed on the 88th annual Geneva show.

Abt

Abt has been around since 1970, and almost 50 years later they're still killing it as one of the elite Audi tuners of the world. Their RS5-R and RS6-R will both be sold as complete, fully built vehicles, and limited to just 50 examples each. Not just fitted with their aero, wheels, suspension, and interior upgrades, both have also been tuned to 523 horsepower and 509 lb.-ft. of torque (79hp and 66 lb.-ft. more than stock). Their upgrade package matched with factory Sonoma green on the RS5-R is simply beautiful in person.

Speaking of beautiful green cars, BMW rolled out its M8 Gran Coupe concept. The production model is said to feature all-wheel drive and a 650hp twin-turbo V8, but the price tag is speculated to be near the $200K range. We can dream...

Ferrari 488 Pista

Here is the first public debut of the new 488 Pista. All you need to know is it's the successor of special edition models like the 458 Speciale, it makes 710hp and 568 lb.-ft. of torque from a 3.9L twin-turbo V8, does a 0-60mph in 2.8 seconds, has a top speed of 211mph, is 200 lbs. lighter than the standard 488 GTB, and you still can't afford one.

These little convertible jeeps are ... you guessed it, electric-powered! Built by Moke America, the electric motors make about 20hp and 70 lb.-ft. of torque - that'll get you up to about 25mph. Think of it as a beach-friendly golf cart, though we're not so sure they're worth the $16K price tag they carry ...

VW Golf GTI TCR

We covered the Civic Type R TCR last week, but here is Volkswagen's counterpart. Long story short, it's powered by a 2.0L turbo and makes 345bhp and it's offered with a seven-speed DSG or sequential race tranny. Full 'cage, pair of buckets, digital dash, air jacks, widebody aero, and a chassis stiffer than a vodka on the rocks make it one VW racecar we'd love to get behind the wheel of.

Hennessey Venom F5

It debuted at the SEMA Show, but perhaps the Geneva crowd is more interested in the 1,600hp Venom F5? Surely there are more folks who can afford the 300mph hypercar at a cool $1.6 million ...

Honda EV Concepts

2018 geneva international motor show honda urban ev Photo 19/183   |   2018 Geneva International Motor Show Honda Urban Ev

We're really digging the design of these two Honda EV concepts. The Urban EV is the cute hatch, reminiscent of the first-gen Civic. It debuted in Frankfurt, but at Geneva they announced a production model would be offered for the European market in 2019. The Sports EV didn't have much info, but it's yet another sign more EV cars will be offered in the future, even in roadster form.

Jaguar I-Pace

The answer to Tesla's Model X, and will sell for $69,500, the I-Pace should hit 0-60mph in 4.5-seconds, have up to 240 miles in range and a top speed of 124mph. While that's all fine and dandy, Jag also showed off its I-Pace eTrophy car. In support of Formula E electric racing, the eTrophy will be a series run on the same circuits and weekends as Formula E using all race-spec I-Paces. Who's ready for more noiseless racing? http://www.superstreetonline.com/features/news/2019-jaguar-i-pace-production-first-look/

Lamborghini Huracan Performante Spyder

Always a crowd pleaser and center of attention, the Lambo booth displayed its latest convertible, which is lighter and more powerful than the base Performante. Like the Ferrari 488 Pista, BMW M8 and Hennessey F5, we suspect most of us won't be able to buy one of these anytime soon... Sad face.

Our friends at Liberty Walk expanded on their Geneva booth from last year, adding two cars and a ton of presence! Checking out their GT-R and Aventador front and center - it was hard for any attendee not to admire the widebody and aired-down showstoppers. https://www.instagram.com/libertywalkkato/

Mansory

2018 geneva international motor show mansory ferrari 812 Photo 29/183   |   2018 Geneva International Motor Show Mansory Ferrari 812

Mansory takes the award for being the loudest and gaudiest of Geneva. They definitely have some heavy hitters like the Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari 812 Superfast, Aston Martin DB11 and McLaren 720S, but their styling choices are a little questionable...

Lexus UX

Based on a similar platform of the Toyota C-HR, the new Lexus UX looks to be a more premium CUV with sexy lines and a hatchback feel, plus hybrid and four-wheel drive options. We're looking forward to getting behind the wheel and maybe building a new SEMA project! Hint, hint, Lexus...

McLaren Senna

2018 geneva international motor show mclaren senna gtr Photo 34/183   |   2018 Geneva International Motor Show Mclaren Senna Gtr

It was our first time seeing both the Senna hypercar and the Senna GTR Concept. The Senna is a 789hp road-legal track car, limited to 500 units in production. The GTR is speculated to be limited to 75 units, track-only, and injected with a bunch of steroids - wider track, fenders, revised transmission, suspension, more power, downforce, the list goes on... The GTR will weight 2,204 lbs. and put down 813hp from its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. It's going to be insane on the circuit, but we're still not in love with the Senna's overall design...

Historic Geneva Concept Cars

Ever wonder where concept cars go? At Geneva, you might find 'em resurfacing years later. Call it a TBT, maybe? We loved checking out the Lamborghini Marzal, a concept car from 1967 designed by Bertone. Its chassis is based on the Lamborghini Miura and the use of exposed glass is extraordinary. Next to the Lambo was a Lancia concept from '78 dubbed the Bertone Sibilo, followed by the Pininfarina Birdcage, which debuted in '05.

Nissan Formula E

There's the Nissan Leaf, and then there's the Formula E. See the connection? At least that's what Nissan wants you to believe about its investment into EV and Formula E. Nissan will be the first Japanese manufacturer to commit to the all-electric racing series. The new race car and livery sure look cool, but we're still trying to get used to racing with the mute button on.

Pal-V Liberty

"Dom cars don't fly!" Well, they do now with the Dutch-built Pal-V Liberty flying car. It lacks the proper certification still and will cost you at least the price of two new Ferrari 488s, but it's interesting to see what's possible in the world today.

RUF

It's hard to follow-up the Yellow Bird from last year, right? Maybe not. RUF returned to Geneva with the SCR, an ode to the original SCR they built in the '70s. This version brings everything up to modern standards - for example, the 4.0-liter flat-six that produces 503hp. There's also the carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, built-in 'cage, pushrod suspension, and plenty of other amazing details that are reminiscent of the Yellow Bird. Next to the green SCR there was the CTR3 Clubsport, and oh yes, another SCR in orange!

The WTF Honor goes to this thing built by Sbarro. It appears to be an off-road racer based off the Porsche Cayenne with the interior and V8 engine of the Cayenne Turbo S. I don't know... Maybe they should stick to making pizza (just kidding—I know they're not the same company).

Subaru previewed what the new STI's design could look like with its Viziv Performance Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show last year. At Geneva, they previewed a WRX wagon concept that looks frickin' awesome, too. Go, Subaru!

Last but not least, we have the world-renowned Porsche tuner Techart. I've always looked up to Techart builds growing up and they continue to set the bar when it comes to aftermarket Porshe parts and styling. The Panamera Sport Turismo is what they highlighted at Geneva, and it looked absolutely stunning in its racing green color. Add wheels, titanium exhaust, GrandGT Styling package, custom Nappa leather interior, and 90hp, and yes, this is one badass tourer. Oh, and we don't mind the 911s in the booth, either. Bravo.
