There's never a whole lot of aftermarket or cool news that takes place at major auto shows, but this year's New York show proved to be a bit special thanks to Toyota with the introduction of its next Corolla, a pair of limited edition Lexus, and a well-played exhibit from one of our favorite local shops, RavSpec.
1. Corolla Hatchback
Gone is the Corolla iM (formerly Scion iM) and welcome the new and improved '19 Toyota Corolla Hatchback. It looks heaps better with a sleek and more aggressive design, LED head- and taillights, wider track, and longer wheelbase. It's projected to drive a lot sportier thanks to a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder, six-speed manua,l and updated suspension/chassis (we'll have a full review soon). To celebrate the new Corolla in New York, Toyota also debuted Frederic Aasbo's '18 Formula DRIFT competition car, which uses the same body components of the new Corolla with the addition of fenders and all that other rad stuff that makes it a drift car (1,000hp turbocharged 2AR, rear-wheel drive conversion, etc.). A big congrats is also in order to Frederic and his team for taking first place at the first round in Long Beach, and third place in the second round at Orlando!
2. Celebrating F
It's hard to believe, but the "F" performance brand of Lexus is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The limited-edition matte grey RC F and GS F were unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show prior, but it was our first time checking 'em out in NY. There will only be 240 (RC F) and 100 (GS F) 10th anniversary models made available in the States so we're certain they'll go like hotcakes.
RavSpec has been showing off at the New York auto show for some time now, and they also know how to make their presence felt despite the show being predominantly OEM. We were quite fond of their '17 Dodge Charger Scat Pack, which was lowered on KWs and 20-inch Volk Racing TE37 Ultra wheels. RavSpec also showed off a tame Civic Type R that had its stock 20s swapped out for 19-inch Gram Lights 57ANA wheels. The GT-R in their booth has seen more changes than we can count, but its current setup features a 19-inch TE037 6061 wheels, Phoenix's Power carbon front bumper, Overtake carbon rear bumper, Krea Development fenders along with Varis side skirts and over-fenders, plus a Voltex swan-neck rear wing. Last but not least, off-road vehicles continue to gain popularity within the community, and the '17 Roush Ford Raptor on 20-inch Gram Lights 57Trans-X wheels made us really wish we had a big truck in our garage!
