While walking the endless rows and corrals at BimmerFest West 2018 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., I definitely saw a lot of cars. Like a lot of them. Some of them were stock, some of them were, ahem, "different," and some of them were exceptionally awesome. While I have a healthy appreciation for the mediocre, I know most of you reading this don't. So, I'm going to keep this interesting by only showing you some of the freshest BMWs I had the pleasure of laying eyes upon at BimmerFest. Now put on your fun hats and let's get started!
IND STYLE M2 COUPE
One look at this car and you may think I found it in the vendor row, but you'd be wrong. I found this M2 coupe in a car corral with everyone else, though its bright green hue helped it stand out among the sea of otherwise red, black, white, and silver BMWs. The black BBS wheels and custom carbon fiber pieces like the housing for the front fog lights made the paint pop even more so. I spent a lot of time—maybe too much—admiring this coupe.
BLACK E36 M3 COUPE
When I was in high school it was the E36 model that was the M3 of the day. Because of that, it will always have a special place in the cozy nostalgia corridor of my heart. This particular E36 put a big smile on my face because it was incredibly clean though it appears that it is well driven. I particularly liked that this car had the factory wing, which was a rare sight when I was a kid. Furthermore, I appreciate how the owner went with a set of SSR wheels, bucking the trend of mesh style rollers so often found on German sports cars.
RED CAMOUFLAGE WIDEBODY E46 M3
The irony here is palpable. Taking something like camouflage, the very existence of which is to blend into its surroundings, and making it into something as flashy as this is something to be applauded. One area where the camo does succeed is slightly masking that there is in fact a Rocket Bunny widebody kit on this M3 (though, up close the kit definitely comes through). I also really like how the black TE37 wheels complete with the red stickers complement the theme.
2002 TURBO COUPE
I decided to save the best for last and show off this gorgeous restored 2002 coupe. Unlike the M2 coupe I mentioned earlier, this 2002 was in the vendor row and it almost always had a big crowd around it. I literally had to wait until the end of the day when people were leaving just to get the shots you see here. The cleanliness of this car is absolutely next level, especially when considering the polished pieces and the vintage (and also polished) BBS wheels. If all that weren't enough, one look under the hood reveals an upgraded turbo system with gold foil for heat management. Then the whole car is set off with a "respect your elders" decal on the back! Cot Dayum!
HONORABLE MENTION: THIS GUY...
Look at this guy! Seriously, just look at him! All he did was chop the hatch off a E36 318Ti, effectively making it into a German mini-truck, and it looks awesome! That's probably why he has that "I just figured out the meaning of life" smile on his face. Whoever you are, we commend you sir!
