Wekfest Chicago 2018

Hundreds of the area's finest builds take to McCormick Place as the show series celebrates 10 years of keeping it real

Wekfest is 10 years old in 2018, a pretty big accomplishment we think considering the car show series has largely stuck to its original way of doing things since 2009. Yes, it hosts more events now than ever before, and it's only grown in popularity over the last decade. But the size and scale of a Wekfest gig remain on the modest size (well, with the exception of the huge crowds that always seem to turn out) because just like day one its events are more akin to museum exhibitions and less like tuner crowd festivals (which is to say there's usually minimal redirect from the main attractions: the cars). Wekfest has taken the art of curating one of its shows—of being hyper selective about the entries it displays, separating the wheat from the chaff (it's a thing! Look it up!)—to the next level.

While this year is Wekfest's tenth, this was its first at Chicago's Navy Pier, holding its Windy City stop at McCormick Place and the Donald E Stephens Convention Center in previous years. Wekfest Chicago delivered 350-plus builds of the Euro, Japanese, and domestic varieties, pre-screened and reflecting the gamut of project car philosophies. Of course we sent our Detroit dude Ryan Belville to cover the proceedings, and he returned with a couple of galleries and a sick video.

In the mix you'll find beauts like Jason Pham's insane RB26-swapped S15 Silvia, which graced the cover of the March 2018 issue; Touge Factory S chassis twinsies; and AC Castro's dumped R32 Skyline on Work Emotions. Our favorite, though, was the blacked-out, massively rear-winged first-gen. Cefiro that was at the show, a bit of JDM goodness for the car nerd out there. Sold in Japan, the luxury variant shared a transmission, engine, and rear suspension with the R32 Skyline, among other Nissan platforms from the late 1980s to early '90s.

Enjoy the photos and video from Wekfest Chicago 2018. Wekfest will be in San Jose on July 1 for the one that started it all, and the SS staff will be rolling out to Wekfest L.A. on August 5th.
