Don't be surprised if you run into a BMW, VW, Aston, Bentley, Porsche or Benz. Eurofest encompasses the entire Euro scene in the greater Toronto area and its inaugural '09 event was a huge success, despite unpredictable weather.
Conceived by old school BMW gearhead Randy Sparre, you might remember his E30 BMW 325i feature back in et 3/01. "Years ago myself and two friends came up with an idea of a BMW-only show geared toward hardcore enthusiasts. The show was Bimmercruise and included a leisurely drive through sections of Southwestern Ontario," Randy told us. The attendance grew exponentially and eventually became more than just a cruise. "People were driving from as far away as Pennsylvania," he smiled.
In '08, the event surpassed 200 cars, so Randy and friends had the idea for Eurofest. The show would be held at Toronto Motorsports Park (TMP), which housed a quarter-mile drag strip as well as a 1.8-mile road course.
Eurofest '09 took over the compound, offering Euro owners a chance to compete in time attack sessions on the circuit as well as drag race. BMWs were the prominent vehicle of choice throughout the road course, but the show-n-shine displayed more than 300 cars of different makes. A mobile dyno was present for car owners to test their horsepower. And just so organizers could please all car fanatics, an audio competition was held by IASCA.
Since many attendees brought their families, kids were treated to inflatable tents and a rock-climbing wall. Even the local police K9 force dropped by to demonstrate its attack-hounds, as volunteers strapped on padded suits to experience their ferocity.
As you can tell from the photos, dark clouds plagued the event, which might have scared some people away. Yet the event remained dry and kept people's spirits high.
"The show has grown every year and I have a dedicated team of 30 volunteers to thank, as well as my fiancée who runs the registration," said Randy.
For the 2010 show, Eurofest will include a new type of racing to please the monster power fans - a 60-130mph highway drag race on TMP's 3000ft strip. So buckle your seatbelts and plan for Eurofest '10!
