Sept 25 - Torrance, CA
It was just a few years ago that the members of S2ki.com joined forces to celebrate Honda's topless two-seater in Southern California. With such a massive response from the first shindig, forum member and resident organizer extraordinaire, Mike Trinh, decided to throw a follow-up event at Honda's Torrance, CA, headquarters.
Putting together a truly successful meet, car show, or track event takes a healthy balance of patience and top-notch organizational skills, as well as a little bit of luck. In Trinh's case, he happened to have all of the above, along with a few friends to help make sure there were no snags during the planning process. Forum members registered a full year prior to the meet, and throughout those 365 days, the organizers filled their free time with meetings at Honda, contacting potential sponsors, and mapping out the entry and parking situations for a stress-free event.
As the day finally arrived, we made our way to the meet-up point in Irvine, CA. Separated by chassis color, the parking lot and adjoining parking structure spaces were filled with red, yellow, white, black, blue, and silver roadsters. Groups headed out with their respective group leaders to make their way toward Honda HQ. Cruising on the freeway in a group of 30 to 40 yellow S2000s tends to turn quite a few heads, and fortunately a police presence didn't put a damper on things. Pulling into the Honda parking lot, we flashed our passes, were checked off the list by the staff, and waved in without any hesitation.
The day's festivities included lunch, an appearance and autograph session with the designer of the S2000, and a showcase of amazing VIP cars that had the visitors cheering as they rolled in. Wondering if there's going to be a part III to all of this Homecoming madness? Trinh says no, but we have a feeling that might change in a few years as the S2000 community continues to swell, picking up new members daily.
