SubieFest has been bringing Subaru enthusiasts together in California since 2006 but seeing as we're in the middle of a pandemic lockdown and all, their hopes for holding an event this year were largely dashed. Largely, but not completely—instead of their traditional meet and mingle, which is usually around this time of year, SubieFest teamed up with Subaru of America (SOA) to do something special for 2020, namely attempt to reset the Guinness World Record for the largest parade of Subaru. And since all these Subaru lovers were going to be in one place at the same time, organizers decided to tease something new and cool that's coming down the pike: the next generation BRZ.

The gathering was set in the parking lot of the Orange County Fair and Events Center in Costa Mesa, and the record wasn't simply broken, it was demolished. A parade of 1,751 Subaru stretched for some two miles, a number that we understand more than triples the previous record set in 2015. The procession of vehicles wound through a cone course that ended with a drive-through display featuring STI heritage vehicles, the largest collection of STI 22B models in the U.S., and Subaru Motorsports USA race cars, and it was a properly socially distanced and contactless affair, with attendees staying put inside their cars.

At the end of the route, drivers came up on a large, sheer black-curtained display that concealed the next gen. BRZ. No info was provided, but we could see at least a few telling design differences from the current BRZ, those being a large vent in the front fenders behind the wheels, and sharper, less curved taillights, at least when viewed from the side. We basically only got a profile view of the car, but it was enough to set our imaginations running.

No tickets were sold to the event but Subaru did ask for donations to Feeding America from each registrant who participated in the record attempt. Feeding America is the nation's largest domestic hunger-relief organization, and we're told contributions from participants will provide 241,800 meals; additionally, SOA will match donations, bringing the total number of meals to 500,000. Hanging out with Subie friends, getting to (kinda) see the next generation BRZ, and helping out the less fortunate—sounds like a win-win-win to us.
