The holidays are upon us, and in addition to overspending on gifts and overeating with fam, this time of year is supposed to be a special period of reflection, rejuvenation, and consideration of our fellow man. To that end, we see across automotive enthusiast communities everywhere a general uptick in philanthropy, with one of the biggest charity events of the season here in Southern California, the Winter Drive meet put on by AutoCon and Purist Group.
Winter Drive 2014 Coverage
Winter Drive’s main goals are to raise donations for a number of local assistance organizations and schools, as well as provide aid to children of the less fortunate. Last year the event collected in excess of $250,000 in toys, and this year could top that, with reportedly over 10,000 donations of toys and school supplies.
The third edition of the annual Winter Drive took place in the parking lot at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, a new venue for the event. It attracted an eclectic mix of cars, including many exotics and supercar/hypercar exhibits, chief among them a Ferrari LaFerrari, Pagani Huayra, and a Mercedes AMG CLK GTR, which we understand is one of only 26 ever made and valued at something like $2.5M. There were also many more modest examples of custom cars from the like of RWB, Magnus Walker, Liberty Walk, and others.
Some of the larger backers of this year’s Winter Drive included Greddy, Nitto, and the 501st Legion, which is a volunteer collective of “costume enthusiasts” decked out in full Star Wars Imperial regalia (it was pretty crazy to see all the Stormtroopers and Star Wars universe baddies cruising the show). Scion was also an important part of the proceedings, kicking down $2,500 to Cody Walker on behalf of Reach Out Worldwide, a nonprofit disaster relief volunteer organization founded by Cody’s brother, the late Paul Walker.
