NERD ALERT: Influential pop culture media brand gets into the car accessory biz

Nov 4, 2016

Lest you think we’re just about cars and our interests don’t stray elsewhere, we came across a 2016 SEMA Show booth in the Las Vegas Convention Center’s Central Hall that made our inner geek freak out like a comic book fan stumbling on the find of a lifetime at his local book store. Marvel Entertainment has licensed out some of its most popular characters to an accessory maker that’s developed a line of shift knobs, valve caps, and tow hook “drift charms” targeted at that car enthusiast who’s open to incorporating a little superhero worship into their project car build. Oh. My. God.

Captain America, Deadpool, Iron Man, the Hulk, Punisher, and Spiderman each have their likenesses or a symbolic representation thereof transferred onto vehicular tchotchkes, making for some – um, “interesting?” – adornment. Of course, the mixing of car and comic book superhero worlds is nothing new; who can forget the 2012 campaign when Kia commissioned builds to reflect several members of DC Comics’ Justice League? We can’t (as much as we’d like to).

Marvel’s step into the accessory market is certainly a lot more accessible to the average consumer, and frankly we really dig the trinkets, but like a lot of this kind of chaff we’re pretty sure these things are destined for the clearance bin at your local Wal-Mart. Still, we’d totally rock ‘em, especially if they came out with, say, Guardians of the Galaxy swag (are you listening, Marvel?) No word on when and where the accessories will be available, but we’ll be sure to let you know when we know.

NoWo this year was poppin'. For it being billed as primarily a VAG affair, there was a thoroughly diverse mix on hand, from more run-of-the-mill builds to one-offs, and other limited-edition fare.
