Ultimate Street Car Challenge - The One

Experience pays when it comes to winning the Ultimate Street Car Challenge. And James Chen has more than anyone else in this contest. Chen won the inaugural event with his Ferrari 360, finished sixth last year in his MR2 and revisited the winner's circle again this year with a Nissan 350Z.

Chen's supercharged Z won only three tests-60-to-0 braking, Emissions and the Car Show, and finished second in three more-the Grandma Test, the Gross Display of Horsepower and the Road Course. In final scoring, the Z finished 44 points ahead of Roy Narvaez's Eclipse-less than the margin separating the two cars in the braking test and again proving that winning USCC is an exercise in hair splitting.

Matt Andrews' third-place Supra also had a shot at the title. If Andrews' Supra had matched Chen's Z on the road course and been a little closer in emissions and brake testing, there would be a green Supra on this page. Still, it's consistency, not domination in one performance arena, that wins USCC.

Any discussion of the winner wouldn't be complete without giving credit to the Skyline boys from RB Motoring. They were a full 100 points ahead of the nearest competitor when their car's engine failed in spectacular fashion on the road course. Sooner or later a Skyline will win USCC.

We expect an even more impressive field for USCC 2004. Congratulations, James.

Make no mistake; FD Texas was a rough one.

If there was one phrase to sum up a first-timer's experience at Tuner Evolution Chicago, it would be "culture shock."

NoWo this year was poppin'. For it being billed as primarily a VAG affair, there was a thoroughly diverse mix on hand, from more run-of-the-mill builds to one-offs, and other limited-edition fare.
