If drifting or drag racing isn't your cup of tea, time attack might be for you. Global Time Attack (GTA) was founded with a simple goal in mind: Assemble the world's fastest dedicated time attack cars. The concept is quite simple: Clock the fastest lap time in the class your car is suited for. Anyone can enter and there are multiple classes catering to professionals all the way down to amateurs and street-oriented cars. We caught up with GTA President Jason Dienhart to explain the series' ins and outs.
How did GTA begin?
JD: I was having a conversation with Christian Rado, reminiscing about the import "NIRA" drag racing days. We were comparing it to the current state of time attack at the time, 2010. There were quality time attack teams looking for a quality series to align themselves with that would promote them and the sport. I also wanted to get back into racing really bad. I have missed it for years. It was a good opportunity for me to get back into racing by creating a time attack series that the teams respected - one that I would've respected when I used to race. Rado was really instrumental in the beginning introducing me to a lot of the time attack teams and putting in a good word for me. I started to put together a GTA team, we made plans, wrote a rule book, and made a announcement at SEMA 2010 at a press conference that Continental Tire helped us set up. We were on are way.
What separates GTA from other motorsports?
JD: Time Attack is driver, car, and team working together harmoniously to cut the fastest lap at a given road course. It is about competing for the fastest lap and trying to break course records. The time attack team against the road course one-on-one. At GTA we try to tell that story through our professional photography and videos that we post on our websites, social media pages, and through our media partners distribution channels.

What are GTA's goals?
JD: To provide an easily accessible and challenging time attack venue for the growing community of motorsports enthusiasts, from the drivers to the builders. To make a positive impact towards the growth of time attack. Building the GTA Road Atlanta event in May into the largest East Coast time attack in the United States. Lastly, making the GTA Super Lap Battle Finals at Buttonwillow, CA in November the benchmark time attack event for all of the time attack teams in the United States.
What does it take to run in GTA?
JD: The desire to go fast, some track experience, and your car must pass the GTA Safety Technical Inspection. If you are new to the sport we can set you up with some driving instruction sessions. Just contact firstname.lastname@example.org.

What kinds of classes are in GTA?
JD: There are four classes: Enthusiast Class, Street Class, Limited Class and Unlimited Class. Within each class you have three drivetrain divisions: AWD, RWD and FWD. For example the AWD drive cars compete against other AWD cars within the Street Class. Tire Compounds and Aero Dynamics are the main factors in determining the class in which a car falls into. For example, Street compound tires in the Street Class, and race slicks in the Unlimited Class.

What kinds of cars are entered in GTA?
JD: We see full on daily driven street cars that compete all the way up to fully dedicated time attack machines. AWD Subarus and Mitsubishis are popular and so are the Hondas. But we see everything from Mazda Miata's to Corvettes to Nissan Silvias to Porsches. Even Ford Mustangs and Fiat's. It is cool to see the wide variety of makes and models going up against each other for the fastest lap times.

Can the average person enter?
JD: Yes, the average guy or girl can enter and have done so in the past. The GTA Pro Am Shift-S3ctor events are $250 per entry and the GTA Pro Championship events are $500 per entry.
What makes GTA teams unique?
JD: They truly are teams working together towards a common goal of going fast and being the fastest in class. Each team is made up of the most resourceful group of individuals you will ever meet, hyper-competitive to the max, but also willing to help out a rival or a newcomer, all in the spirit of speed and good fun.
How many teams are currently in GTA?
JD: We normally see 25 to 50 teams at a given GTA event. And we are in contact with over 200 active teams across the country.
What has been the biggest hurdle for GTA?
JD: Getting the major media to cover our time attacks was really tough in the beginning. In 2013, we secured solid media partnerships with respected media outlets such as SORC, and things are looking positive. We still have a long way to go, but we feel good about the progress and future.
Who's your target audience?
JD: Anyone that wants to see how fast they can take their car around the track. That is what's great about time attack, you can be a newcomer or a seasoned road racer and you are both at the track doing the same thing: Pushing your car and yourself to the fastest lap possible.

How are you working to improve GTA's exposure?

We also work closely with our partners Continental Tire, SPEC Clutch, Turbo By Garrett, MotoIQ, Whiteline, Motor Mavens, and MSTR Watches on various unique co-promotions to introduce time attack to their audiences.
