It's been an exciting year for the Formula Drift series as it marks its 10 years in operation. The special 10th anniversary season brought upon new drivers, new cars, and new track layouts. One of the new tracks was featured last weekend during the Round 6: Showdown. It's been eight years since the Formula Drift series visited the Lone Star state and this year the new track layout at Texas Motor Speedway shaped up to be one of the fastest and technical circuits seen this year, especially during the tandem runs.
The consolation round pitted Patrick Mordaunt in his Diamond Lighting/ Apexi Lexus SC430 against Chris Forsberg driving the NOS Energy Drink/ Hankook Tire Nissan 370Z. The 2009 Formula Drift champion Forsberg proved to be too much for Mordaunt and took third place placing him second in the overall standings.
The final battle was left for Matt Field in the CX Racing/ Maxxis/ Blacktrax Nissan 240SX and Michael Essa piloting the GSR Autosport/ Yokohama BMW M3. After an intense battle, Essa edged out Field with first place and the lead in the Pro Championship standings for the 2013 series. It was a second straight podium finish for Michael Essa and a first podium finish for Matt Field in his Formula Drift career.
"First year here at this track and the course was just insane with sustained speed throughout. It was just crazy out there, but we were able to take home the win," said Michael Essa. "Our GSR Autosport BMW E46 with Wisefab suspension and Bilstein suspension along with Yokohama Tires helped make this an amazing event for us. We are leading the points right now by about 15 points heading into Irwindale and we have a shot at the Championship which is not what we expected entering this season with a new car and can't be more happy with the results."
"It is always exciting to hold an event at a new venue and Texas Motor Speedway provided a great place to showcase drifting. The event outcome sets up a competitive finale, " stated Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT.
Next stop is the "House of Drift" at Irwindale Speedway, CA on October 11-12th. It is the final competition of the season. A narrow 90 points separates the top six drivers from the championship. With the last round of the series we're sure all the drivers will be pushed to their limits. Additionally, the new tire and manufacturer championship will be decided during the final round of the 10 season of Formula Drift.
