New to the event but not new to the pages of european car was our own E46 BMW M3 project car, which belongs to Senior Features Editor and Photographer Alex Bernstein. He described the Bavarian beast as a bit of a handful due to a combination of its massive single turbo kit and RWD.
Alex Bernstein, european car staffer said, “We really just finished building it. It has taken a lot of time and tweaking to really dial in. It did well on the dyno - better than expected at a safe level on a stock motor. I’m going to tone it down a bit for the drag and road course portions. This car was built to be an all-around performer and street car. It’s a monster in a straight line and handles well. Aside from traction issues in the quarter mile I don’t see it having a downfall.”
Major modifications include a Maximum PSI stage 1 turbo kit, Performance Friction braking components, KW Clubsport coilovers and Bimmerworld exhaust.
At the dyno, our M3 project car went lean at high RPM, which forced the operator to lift off early to avoid a problem. Despite the issue, it managed an impressive 647hp and 498.8 lb-ft of torque on its first run. For more, read the full story in our February 2014 issue.
