Jan 12, 2014 SHARE

FR Shootout Details:

  • Took place at Willow Springs Raceway (Street Circuit) in California
  • separate classes Forced Induction and Naturally Aspirated
  • 2011 Formula D champion Daijiro Yoshihara drives the Sportcar Motion S2000

1990 Nissan 240SX

Name: Will Wattanawongkiri

Class: Forced Induction

At first place overall we have Will's 1990 Nissan 240SX and his best lap was a 1:23:592. His SR20DE motor gets most of its power from a S15 Silvia turbo. It's making a healthy 319 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque. You would never believe it, but Will and his team blew their motor at a weekend track event. That didn't stop them from taking home the gold. This was the very same car that Will learned how to drift in back in the day, but over the years it turned from a canyon carver to a track monster.

2000 Honda S2000

Name: Craig Stanton

Class: Forced Induction

Next up is the Church Automotive Testing/DG Spec Honda S2000. There's not much too say about this AP1 other than it's a complete beast. The supercharged Honda was pumping out 490hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. On top of racing at the track, owner Shawn Church has taken it to top speed runs, drag racing and autocross. Behind the wheel was the 2005 Rolex Series GT Champion, Craig Stanton, who nailed a 1:24:040 around the Streets of Willow Springs.

Class: Forced Induction

Sportcar Motion showed up guns blazing with its AP2 powered by a Science of Speed supercharger. Hired driver Jeff Ringer was able to get third place overall this year. He laid down a 1:24:288 on his best lap. Sportcar Motion plans on swapping the 330hp and 250lb-ft torque F22 engine for a K24.

2013 Scion FR-S

Driver: Jeff Westphal

Class: Forced Induction

Bringing out one of the most exciting chassis in the industry right now was Innovate Motorsports, who equipped their FR-S with the company's Twin Screw Intercooled Supercharger. While it may look like a dedicated track car, Innovate Motorsports says it's a true street car and daily driver. This specific car has seen plenty of tracks days and countless dyno runs, yet it still delivers on our yearly track event. At the end of the day the 235hp/200lb-ft torque ZN6 clocked a 1:25:308. Owner Sean Crawford says, "We purchased our FR-S as a development vehicle for our Innovate Motorsports FT86 Supercharger Systems. The car has all bolt-on, readily available components and has 7,500 hard test miles on it. Today we are running 91 octane pump gas and our off-the-shelf carb pending tune."

2013 Subaru BRZ Limited

Driver: Mike Kang

Class: Forced Induction Like the FR-S, the BRZ was another highly anticipated chassis at the event. Owner Ted Park says, "After one year of track-based development and tuning, I've been building the car in anticipation of the turbo. Today's event is the first real test of my build and I'm hoping the car holds up well to stay competitive and provide a base for fine tuning and refinement in the coming year!" The Greddy T518Z turbo gives the BRZ a 250hp and 200lb-ft torque output. With Mike Kang behind the wheel, the CounterSpace Garage ZC6 clocked a 1:26:033.

2013 Subaru BRZ

Driver: Nico Rondet

Class: Forced Induction Class

GROUP-A Autosports/Kraftwerks brought its Subaru BRZ this year and tested the Kraftwerks Supercharger system. Nico Rondet took this 338hp/240lb-ft torque rocket into eighth overall. The Kraftwerks supercharger system is said to provide instant throttle response with a progressive power curve to redline. At the end of the day the team managed a 1:28:030.

2013 Scion FR-S

Driver: Jeff Westphal

Class: Forced Induction Class

Jeff Westphal drove two cars for our event, the Innovate Motorsports FR-S and the Robispec Racing FR-S owned by Robert Fuller. This one had an output of 280hp and 210lb-ft of torque and lapped the track in 1:28:707. Considering it's only using an Innovate supercharger, ninth overall and seventh in its class is pretty impressive.

1990 Nissan 240SX

Driver: Robert Venable

Class: Forced Induction

Seeing this 1990 Nissan 240SX by Design Craft being driven around the track was awesome. Equipped with an SR20 and a Garret 2871R5-GTRS turbo, this S13 is pushing 341hp and 286lb-ft. of torque. Robert's original intention was to make it a daily driver, but like many tuner scenarios it became more than that. His best lap time was a 1:29:885. "This is my fourth time attack. I come out and challenge myself. It's awesome Import Tuner gave us this opportunity," says Robert. "My times got better. It's great to be behind great drivers and to follow their lines. It was an awesome experience."

1991 Mazda RX-7

Driver: Robert Baltazar

Class: Forced Induction

Finishing 12th overall is Robert Baltazar with the only rotary-powered vehicle this year. With the help of Lucky 7 Racing, the 13BT motor made an amazing 450hp and 380lb-ft. of torque. Back in 2000 he intended to sell the car, but he had a change of heart and fell back in love with Mazda. It eventually became the track monster you see here. Robert says, "I know it ran good. [Engine temperatures] never went over 180 degrees. I'm happy." Robert managed to get a 1:29:924

1996 Nissan 240SX

Driver: Charlie Osingco

Class: Forced Induction

Easily one of the best looking cars on the track was Charlie's 1996 Nissan 240SX. Getting its power from an SR20DET, the 350hp/310lb-ft. torque Nissan got a 1:38:051 best lap time. The S14 is actually a drift car that Charlie hasn't touched in six months, but he cherishes every moment he gets behind the wheel.

The team retained last year's configuration and it simply worked for them. Robert says, "We're here to set good times and improve from 1.26." They managed to beat their goal with a 1:25.681.

2002 Honda S2000

Driver: Daijiro Yoshihara

Class: Naturally Aspirated

Formula DRIFT champ and all around nice guy Daijiro Yoshihara gets behind the wheel of this Go Spoon Racing S2000. The AP1 gets an F22C engine swap that's making 240hp/160lb-ft. of torque. The team says the car was built to showcase what a street-spec Spoon catalog car can do on the track.

2012 Nissan 370Z

Driver: Martin Choi

Class: Naturally Aspirated

Using only a few engine mods, Martin Choi focused on handling with his daily driven Nissan 370Z. His VQ37VHR has about 350hp and 300lb-ft. of torque. Martin's best lap was a 1:29:365, which placed him third in his class (mind you his goal was fourth or fifth place).

2005 Honda S2000

Driver: Shu Yamawaki

Class: Naturally Aspirated

It's been three years since Shu has worked on this S2000 and he says it's near completion. While it's made for the track, it's fully capable to be a street car. Shu's job at Tein USA's R&D department has given him plenty of track experience. His motor is currently making 240hp and 170lb-ft. of torque, which got him fourth overall with a 1:30:124.

Class: Naturally Aspirated

After searching far and wide Brad found this 2008 350Z Enthusiast Model back in 2011. Brad says," I came out to have a good time. I was able to dial in the suspension and test the Winmax brake pads. My goal was to hit a 1:30." He missed his goal by two seconds with a 1:32:987. Only using a Nismo catback exhaust, Brad's power output was at 305hp and 278lb-ft. of torque.
