The final eight in the 2013 HT Cup Challenge made their way to Chuckwalla Valley Raceway in Desert Center, CA for a 5-lap battle to determine the series champion. The result of eight hungry drivers all vying for the top spot with no more than a few points separating the top of the pile made for one aggressive finale!
Although the desert temps ran north of 105 degrees, the competitors were game, and so focused on the task at hand, that the uncomfortable, dry air was forgotten about as cars were checked, prepped, and adjusted during the morning practice runs.
As the morning gave way to the afternoon, the final eight lined up for the 5-lap battle. Due to not meeting the minimum weight requirements, Tony Jackson and Larry Luster were given a delayed start that would give the other competitors a healthy head start. However, both being experienced drivers with very capable cars, Jackson and Luster began closing the gap in short order and applied pressure to the rest of the pack. Lap after lap, the competitors pushed their cars in hopes of landing in the top spot, and not only earning bragging rights, but taking home $1,000 as well. When the dust finally settled and the points were quickly tallied, it was Jason Kim, the only S2000 in the competition, who walked away the HT Cup Challenge champion. Right behind him in the points standing was Tony Jackson in his Eibach-backed Civic hatchback, and in third, KJ Valle in his '99 Civic EX sedan.
After the battle concluded, all of the competitors headed for the shade to congratulate one another and share war stories as the temperatures continued to climb. Jason Kim brought along his own fan club and the celebration began immediately.
