Chris Forsberg, Hankook Tire Nissan 370Z driver and 2009 series champion, left the 2013 Formula D season with a sour taste in his mouth after a debated final round at Irwindale. New league rules for the 2014 season have since been instated with the intention of lessening driver debate among other things. The past is the past though and Forsberg set his sights on attacking what is now his 11th Formula Drift season.
We decided to follow Chris Forsberg at Long Beach with no idea to what the future held. Beginning on Media Day through qualifying and ultimately to the podium, the video you see above chronicles Formula D RD 1 through his eyes.
Months of prepping the Hankook carbon fiber laden Z included the introduction of nitrous to a relatively small (in comparison to the competition) V8 engine for increased midrange torque necessary for the smaller Long Beach course.
Here is a quick rundown of how Long Beach went down: Forsberg qualified for RD 1 in seventh position while Michael Essa, last year’s Formula D champ, qualified number one. This set the stage for Saturday. Forsberg battled through Dai Yoshihara, Patrick Goodin and finally Darren McNamara’s Falken Nissan S14 on his way to the Top 4. He would end up taking top honors. With Forsberg on top, Norwegian Kenny Moen beat out third place Essa for his first ever series podium.
