Import Face-Off 2016 - Auto Club Famoso Raceway

Northern and Southern California face off once again.

Import Face-Off (IFO) events are always a good time. No, they're not the NHRA World Finals or Import vs. Domestic World Cup. They're not usually the place to see records fall or competitors cross the country to duke it out on the quarter-mile. But they continue to be the place to catch more than a few quick and fast passes, participate in some drag racing among a wide variety of imports (along with a few domestic sport compacts), and - if the event in question lies halfway between SoCal and NorCal - experience some grudge-match racing at its finest.

In terms of California drag racing, "North v South" is a friendly, yet fiercely competitive battle that has been waged since before import drag machines began dotting the horizon. Thankfully, that rivalry still exists today, albeit with a new generation of players.

Southern California street/drag-racing family and friends will no doubt know the names Ritchieworks, Driver B, and Jerry Built. All were present as competition threats in Bakersfield, as well were SoCal-based racing efforts like the Darton Sleeves team, Loarca Racing, and more. Repping the Bay Area were perennial players Red Zone Performance and Sinister Racing, Hybridworks, Team Lightspeed Racing, and more.

But for every one of the aforementioned heavy hitters were countless amateur sportsman SoCal/NorCal drag racers with highly tuned builds and fast heads-up blasts, or consistent bracket-class runs - including some fun and entertaining trips down the strip in daily drivers and tow rigs.

The show portion of events saw its own share of rivalries, with crews from SoCal, NorCal and as far away as Seattle battling for trophies in countless areas. Standouts include Team Hybrid, Slammedenuff, NVUS, R-Rydes and many more, including some very impressive independent entries.

Most impressive was the event as a whole. Grudges and rivalries proved to be as friendly (civil, at least) as they were competitive, the racing went on smoothly with very little setbacks common in past events, and rarely could anyone be seen in stands or walking the grounds without a smile to with whatever team shirt or crew affiliation they wore. And if that's not the perfect embodiment of what a healthy California drag-racing rivalry should be, we don't know what is.
