2019 Super Lap Battle Global Time Attack Finals

Driver Dai Yoshihara redeems the Evasive Motorsports Toyota 86 with an overall event win

They say part of the challenge of succeeding at the world-famous Pikes Peak Hill Climb each summer is how you deal with not just the long layout, but also the X factors that come with extreme elevation change (namely air density, which can affect performance, and unpredictable weather, which can affect everything). By comparison, Buttonwillow Raceway Park is a lot closer to sea level, and has some elevation change, but definitely not over 4,700-foot's worth—keys possibly to pro drifter Dai Yoshihara's victorious performance in the 2JZ-powered Evasive Motorsports Toyota 86 at the 2019 Super Lap Battle Global Time Attack Finals—a car that was built expressly for Pikes.

Dai clocked an event-best 1:41.092 in the Unlimited Rear-Wheel Drive Class ex-FR-S, benefitting from several previous outings at the track, including his 2015 campaign in the Spoon Sports USA FD2 Honda Civic Type R (pre-center seating arrangement) that carried him to an Unlimited Front-Wheel Drive record. Jeff Westphal's 1:38.967 in the Unlimited All-Wheel Drive GST Motorsports Subaru "GST-L" from 2014's event remains the Super Lap Battle standard, and the king of Global Time Attack at Buttonwillow is still William Au-Yeung, who shattered the course's overall high mark last year (2018) in the FWD (!) Vibrant PZTuning Civic with a blistering orbit of 1:37.308.

Like Dai, our bud Amir Bentatou was also in a fast FR at Super Lap this year, guiding the Motorsports Hardware BMW M3 to the top of the Limited-RWD podium with a 1:47.050 flying lap, while in Street-RWD Jackie Ding hustled the PhD Racing A90 Supra around the track for a time of 1:50.059, making it the fastest Mark V at SLB. Ray Guerrero driving the Baby Liam Ford Mustang GT350 took top honors in Enthusiast-RWD, recording a 1:58.405, but only just squeaked by the A90 of Jerel Natividad, who was less than 0.1 seconds off the pace (Jerel clocked a 1:58.476 for second in class).

Of the all-wheel drive battles, Limited class's Steven Chan in the RD Engineering PIT Garage Nissan GT-R eclipsed even the fastest AWD lap in Unlimited; Chan's 1:45.692 was almost 3 seconds quicker than Ying Wang's GT-R, which had the fastest U-AWD time of 1:48.614. Heck, Shawn Krebsbach's 1:48.629 in the Street-AWD Rs Motors Professional Awesome Racing Evo IX was almost as fast as the U-AWD-winning GT-R. Meanwhile, Eduardo Felix in the Team CaliBoostin' Powered by RPM Subaru WRX STI won Enthusiast-AWD with a 2:05.955.

We saw old friends and a couple of Honda Preludes take some of the spotlight in Super Lap's FWD run groups, starting with onetime/longtime SS accomplices driver Andy Hope and builder Brian Gillespie from HASport, who dusted off the Circuit Monsters 'Lude and took the top spot of the Unlimited-FWD podium with a 1:51.266. Cory Wells and Will Drees did even better in Limited-FWD, by about 0.1 seconds, taking the WRD Racing Prelude to the winner's circle with a 1:51.126, while in Street-FWD Steven Kronemberger in the Titan7 Hondata Civic Type R aced the group with a 1:53.191. Tyler Clark was best of Enthusiast-FWD in the Pug Life Motorsport FK8, getting there with a 2:06.093.

Finally, a word about our project 2020 Supra—after a big debut at the 2019 SEMA Show, SLB was the car's performance trial by fire. Editor Sam Du and collaborators Evasive Motorsports groomed the car over months prior to the time attack, shuffling through a handful of modifications before ultimately deciding on KW Clubsport V3 coilover suspension, full EVS Tuning aero kit with Voltex swan-neck rear wing, Brembo GT-S front brakes, wider 295-series Yokohama A052 tires, AMS downpipe and a stage 2 tune from protuningfreaks. With pro driver Dai Yoshihara behind the wheel, we were certain we could get in a decent lap, but unfortunately the Supra's electronic nannies had other ideas. The traction control kicked on and wouldn't turn off again; we believed we had fixed the problem from an earlier shakedown after installing a suspension module. It was back to the drawing board, and after each session for the rest of the day our team troubleshooted the traction control issue by trying a number of different ECU settings. We even unplugged all sensors as well as re-flashed the car ECU back to stock to see if it would work. No cigar.

As the sun began to set and the last session came around, time was up. Dai went out for one more hot lap and matched the original lap time of 1:57.6—this was done with the safety nets of the traction control still engaged. An interesting feat (fastest Supra with traction control on perhaps?) but there was much left on the table. The next goal is clear: resolving the computer issues and getting back out to Buttonwillow. But we've accomplished a lot thus far and we're proud of our team and grateful for how far we've come in only three months.

This was the first year Super Lap Battle was held over a weekend, concluding on a Sunday, the first big change the event has seen since expanding to two days back in 2015. The comp has traditionally been run during the week, and like the decision to go two days, GTA hoped putting on this event on a weekend would increase competitor totals, and it appears to have been the right call, as we had an entry list approaching 90 vehicles (we have times for an amazing 87 cars), certainly one of the biggest time-attacks we've ever seen in the U.S. Enjoy our stunning visuals of the Super Lap Battel Global Time Attack weekend, courtesy of the incomparable Luke Munnell, and look for the GTA season to start up again before too long, with its second annual Circuit of the America's stop in Texas set for February 15 and 16, 2020.
