NOPI, The Xbox Cup Racing Series rocked into Maryland International Raceway and was welcomed by the biggest crowd of sport compact racing fans so far in the 2006 season. The racing was top notch with five records broken during the course of the two day event by the top professional and sportsman teams. With the exception of a couple of track clean up situations the racing was nonstop for the super dedicated NDRA fans at one of the finest facilities in the country. The NOPI Nationals Car Show Series 2006 was packed with the best tuner cars and trucks the central Atlantic states had to offer combined with 20 NOPI Chics in the swimsuit contest NOPI was the hot ticket.
Five new NDRA records were established at the NOPI Maryland event with the Ecotec powered Pro Extreme Compact dragster of Don Nase Jr. setting a new MPH record at 210.14 and fellow GM driver Jason Hunt in the CSI, Matco Tools, Brut - Cobalt setting an ET record in Pro FWD with a 7.461 backed up with a 7.507. Chevy’s are hot in both Pro and Sportsman classes as another CSI car, the K&N Cobalt of Brian Ballard set a new Turbo Street record with a 9.364. MSP Motorsports Krys Efantis blasted out a new BF Goodrich Tires Pro Street Tire ET record of 8.196 on his way to another win extending his points lead. Alternative Motorsports Chuck Seitsinger completed the raid of the record book establishing a new Modified Magazine Pro 4 Cylinder ET record of 8.571 and has repeatedly surpassed the MPH mark but not with in the one percent to establish the MPH record……yet.
NOPI TV Pro Compact
NOPI TV Pro Compact sported two domestic compacts and two import models and for the first time the domestics made it to the finals. Manny Cruz and Len Monserrat qualified three and four while Ben Hopko and Kevin McCurdy took the top spot. For the first time ever in NDRA history the domestics made it to the finals with McCurdy taking out Cruz 6.78 to a 13.85 and Hopko eclipsed Big Len Monserrat’s Mitsubishi 6.73 at 215.48 to an 8.56 at 131.66. In the finals Ben Hopko delighted the fans with his Pro Compact Probe on his way to his first NDRA victory at MIR over Kevin McCurdy, 6.74 at 215.31 to a 6.79 at 203.43
NOS Energy Drink Pro Outlaw RWD
Paul Efantis, two time NDRA Xbox Cup Champion at his home track of MIR was unstoppable after qualifying number one with a 7.147. Brent Rau in the Osofast Eclipse was on his heels with a 7.21, Dennis Lugo qualified at 7.28 and Carl Stevens Jr. rounded out the field with a 7.72. In round one Rau claimed the JE Pistons low reaction time $750 bonus with .025 light but couldn’t get out front of Dennis Logo who ran a 7.60 to Rau’s 7.76. Carl Stevens Jr. had mechanical problems and couldn’t make the call giving Paul E a free pass where he ran 7.40 at 187.65.
Paul Efantis notched another win in the NOS Energy Drink Pro Outlaw RWD taking a broken bye when Dennis Logo’s Mustang wouldn’t fire in the staging lanes, Paul E cruised to a win with a 7.26 taking over the Xbox Cup Championship points lead.
Pro Outlaw FWD
Jason Hunt is on a roll with the points lead, the new Pro Outlaw FWD ET record at 7.461 and two wins so far in the 2006 race to defend his Xbox Cup Championship. The MATCO Tools Cobalt had only one brave competitor, Jimmy Jones of Macon, Georgia who is looking for sponsorship to build his program. Jason took the win for the CSI team with a 7.507 at 184.17 to Jones’s 12.32.
BF Goodrich Tires Pro Street Tire
Krys Efantis makes it two straight wins, qualifies number one and a sets an ET record in the BF Goodrich Tires Pro Street Tire class with the 8.196 in the finals. In round one Krys took a bye in the seven car BF Goodrich Tires Pro Street Tire field, AAP Motorsports Chris Anderson got the short end of the deal against Shane Jennings after a starting line mix up, Peter Champani took out Chris Little, and Mauro Vitale defeated crowd favorite Todd Amandus 8.48 to 8.56. Round two Vitale defeated Jennings 8.59 to a 9.04 and Krystos eliminated Champani 8.23 to a losing 9.48. In the finals Vitale’s Ford wouldn’t be strong enough for MSP’s Krys Efantis who blasted out a new record for the fans at his home track the 8.196 at 170.30 to defeat Mauro who ran a strong 8.27.
Pro GT front runner Manny Buginga powers his way to another number on qualifying position and his third consecutive win. Buginga took the top qualifying spot over Christopher Ketlen in the battle of the Mustangs, Buginga went a 7.81 at 187.57 MPH and Ketlen qualified with a 8.224 at 178.24 MPH. Buginga took home the win with a 7.81 to Ketlen’s 8.22.
Modified Magazine Pro 4 Cylinder
Chuck Seitsinger and crew chief Randy Sprague claim their second victory in 2006 in the Modified Magazine Pro 4 Cylinder and look to reclaim the NDRA Xbox Cup Championship. Seitsinger dominated the event setting a new record of 8.561 in the new Pro 4 format on his way to a win over Harry Sohn in the finals who had a DQ because of fluid coming out of his super fast Del Sol. Jason Raley and Michael Brown rounded out the field qualifying three and four and going out in round one. Seitsinger looks like the man to beat heading to St. Louis with confidence that their program is right on track.
NOPI Pro Stock
In NOPI’s Pro Stock all motor class the five competitors were led by 2002 Xbox Cup Champion Scott Mohler who qualified in the top spot with a 10.16 at 130.97 MPH. In round one he drew a bye along with Austin Johnson III and Joe Conde while Anthony Dowd defeated Brent Webb. In round two Dowd red lighted against Mohler who blew his MOPAR engine but still took the win light. Conde defeated Austin Johnson with a hole shot. In the finals Toronto’s favorite son, Joe Conde chalks up his first ever NDRA win at MIR after Scott Mohler grenades his MOPAR in the semis. Joe did a great job with consistency and professionalism.
