The SPEED World Challenge returned to the famed 10-turn, 2,459-mile Mosport International Raceway for the 17th time is series history and Adam Pecorari in the STaSIS Audi A4 had a career-first weekend claiming his first TC pole and win. Teammate Chip Herr finished second and RealTime Acura TSX driver Pierre Kleinubing finished third.

Saturday’s 20-minute qualifying session got under way at 11:45 am under dark, over cast skies with rain falling and with their all-wheel drive A4’s the STaSIS team dominated the session with Pecorari, Herr, and Ian Bass qualifying one, two, three for Sunday morning’s race. The STaSIS team was so confident in the A4’s traction in the wet that Pecorari actually changed to a dry setup half way through qualifying after a disabled car brought out a red flag partway through the session. “We were quickest on that one lap before the red flag came out. We came in and I said 'put the dry tires on, hook the [sway] bar back up and we’ll go back out.’ So I went back out on the dry tires and it took me a little time, but then I went four or five seconds faster.” said Pecorari after claiming his first career TC pole. “Obviously with the all-wheel drive we have an advantage in the wet. I wasn’t at the Grand Prix of Toronto, so this is my first time qualifying in the wet [in the Audi A4]. Luckily, Thursday morning the track was very similar to [Saturday] and we went out on slicks, so I kind of knew how the car would handle.”

Here’s how the top 10 qualifiers lined up for the race on Sunday afternoon:

1. Adam Pecorari Audi A4 STaSIS/Clear Capital/Pfaff 1:37.769 @ 90.544
2. Chip Herr Audi A4 STaSIS/Clear Capital/Pfaff 1:38.605 @ 89.776
3. Ian Baas Audi A4 STaSIS/Clear Capital/Pfaff 1:39.615 @ 88.866
4. Michael Galati Mazda 6 Mazda North America/Tindol 1:39.732 @ 88.761
5. Pierre Kleinubing Acura TSX Cert. Pre-Owned Acura/RealTime 1:40.089 @ 88.445
6. Randy Pobst Mazda 6 Mazdaspeed Mtspts Development 1:40.147 @ 88.394
7. Kuno Wittmer Acura RSX Cert. Pre-Owned Acura/RealTime 1:40.966 @ 87.677
8. Peter Cunningham Acura TSX Cert. Pre-Owned Acura/RealTime 1:41.537 @ 87.184
9. Jeff Altenburg Mazda 6 Mazdaspeed Mtspts Development 1:41.616 @ 87.116
10. Roberto Santos(R) Mazda 6 MazdaspeedMtrsptsDev/TPM 1:42.126 @ 86.681

Sunday’s 28-lap race started under threatening skies, but the weather held with the sun appearing from time to time … track conditions were dry. Off of the clean standing start, Herr took the hole shot followed closely by Pecorari, Bass, Kleinubing, Wittmer, Pobst and Altenburg. Pecorari passed Herr for the lead on lap 2, while Kleinubing and Wittmer passed Bass. Pobst and Altenburg then passed Bass on lap 5 and for the rest of the race, the top six held order, even after a full course yellow and subsequent restart after Charles Espenlaub in the Mazdaspeed/Tindol Mazda 6 went off on lap 11. The biggest battles of the day occurred between Altenburg and Seth Thomas in the Bimmerworld BMW 325i for sixth and seventh place and between Kleinubing and Wittmer. At one point on lap 25, Kleinubing closed the door on his teammate coming out of the Mario Andretti straightaway and forced Wittmer in the RSX up on the turn 8 apex curb and almost off the track.

With Roberto Santos in the No. 74 Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development Mazda 6 hitting the tire wall heavily on turn 2 on lap 27 a full course yellow flew and the race finished under caution. “At first I wasn’t happy to see that yellow at the end of the race,” Pecorari said. “I thought we were going to go green, white, checker and I was pissed. Then I saw the yellow in [turn] eight and the white flag in [turn] nine and I started going nuts. I almost jumped out of the car.”

Local rookie racer Andrew Wojteczko in the No. 64 Autoanalyser Racing Lexus IS 300 finished an impressive 12th after starting last on the grid after missing qualifying to change an engine. In finishing 12th, Wojteczko took home the Piloti Rookie of the Race award for being the highest finishing rookie, as well as the B&M Holeshot award for advancing five positions on the start and the Sunoco Hard Charger Award for advancing a total of 11 positions in the race.
