As Road Atlanta hosted its largest crowd to date, thousands of fans witnessed a rather interesting preliminary round. Drivers familiarized themselves with a faster, more elongated course as Formula Drift altered the track for the first time in its nine-year history.
Keeping the original course layout the same, the direction of turns was changed as drivers were forced to enter the first hip with a blast of power in order to link turns two and three around the famous Atlanta keyhole. Chaotically sliding uphill, the lower-powered cars found themselves struggling in the smoke of their faster competitors at times.
In the end, Justin Pawlak and his Roush-powered Ford Mustang were able to slide away with the second consecutive win of the season, continuing to defend the points lead and searching for his first FD title.
Next round? Palm Beach, Florida with Pawlak in first, rookie Daigo Saito in second and Scion driver Fredrick Aasbo finishing up the top three. Oh, it’s getting crazy.
