VW Pilots Lock Up Global Rallycross 2015 Driver Championship

With one round left to run, either Scott Speed or Tanner Foust will claim this year’s grand prize

It’s a little weird to talk about the Global Rallycross Championship (GRC) and NOT bring up Ford and its Fiesta, which by and large have dominated the series since it got off the ground in 2011. But with Andretti Autosport hot shoes Scott Speed and Tanner Foust claiming the top two steps of the podium in both races of the Barbados doubleheader this past weekend (Rounds 10 and 11 of 12), the 2015 title chase has come down to either VW Beetle driver and pretty much no one else. Who woulda thunk it?

The good fortune comes after a spate of recent top-three finishes for Andretti Autosport; a Beetle has been in the winner’s circle since Round 8 in Los Angeles in September, and both have made the podium since the same event. In total, VW has a dozen appearances on the podium in 2015, of which five were on the winner’s step. Speed claimed two wins and finished runner-up a further five times, while Foust added three victories out of five podiums total. Speed currently sits atop the standings with 412 points, holding onto a lead of 36 over Foust.

The final round of the 2015 GRC season will be held in Las Vegas, Nev., on November 4, during SEMA Show week. The 12th round completes the season, which began in Fort Lauderdale back in May and led most recently to Barbados, via two races in Daytona, New River, two races in Detroit, Washington D.C., and another doubleheader in Los Angeles.
