A big deal is made about how picturesque the setting is for the original Wörthersee car show, the mega-VAG gathering in the Austrian Alps, but the site for Northern Wörthersee in the US (aka NoWo) gives the lakeside locale in Europe a run for its money. Based in Frankenmuth, the "Little Bavaria" of Michigan, on the grounds of the Bavarian Inn along the bank of the Cass River, the meet location has its own unique charms – namely lush greenery marked by groves of willow trees, an old-fashioned covered bridge, and of course the river. Our shooter covering the show mentioned how he felt like he was in a jungle documenting the event.
In its fourth year, NoWo doesn’t stick strictly to Volkswagen Group fare, welcoming all variety of European tuner cars – BMW, Porsche, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, et al – from all over North America (that’s right, Canada AND Mexico represented in Michigan). This year’s Best of Show was a beautifully kept Type II pickup, but we have our favorites from the gallery, like the dumped C30, racing-spec X-Type, and Saveiro truck, which we didn't even know was a thing.
In spite of some rainy weather, the lot was pretty full and plenty of spectators turned out, both young and old. Looks like the hearty bunch on hand had a good time and we’re glad we sent someone out to photograph the proceedings. Please enjoy our gallery, and for additional information about Northern Wörthersee head over to their website or visit them on Facebook.
