Being Humbled by Some of the Best from Rally, NASCAR & IndyCar in the Subaru iRX All-Star Invitational

Round 2 e-sports race recap, where we learn virtual rallycross against pro drivers is as brutal as real life (maybe even a little more).

With the current shutdown of all motorsports events around the world due to the pandemic, racers have shifted their quarantined competitive energies to the digital world. For weeks, it seemed like everyday a new sanctioning body, series, or big racing backer was launching an initiative to have drivers (and often enthusiasts) take to their consoles, computers or mobile devices and battle one another. Subaru has become one such motorsport enabler, partnering with international virtual racing portal iRacing to present the iRX All-Star Invitational six-event championship.

The e-sports rallycross series features three vehicle platforms (Subaru WRX STI, Ford Fiesta RS WRC, and VW Beetle) and a list of notable hot shoes from across the racing world, like five-time national rally champion Travis Pastrana, four-time US rallycross champ Scott Speed, past Indy 500 champ Alexander Rossi, and others from the FIA World Rallycross, NHRA, Supercross, and more. The drivers are competing for a $10,000 prize purse that will be donated to charity on their behalf.

We got an invite to the second round of the Subaru iRacing All-star Invitational to participate in the event set at Daytona International Speedway this past Friday. I piloted an STI representing Super Street and MotorTrend, and with two days of practice I was able to qualify 19th.

Before making it to the feature race, I needed to go head-to-head in Heat Race 3 out of 4 against five other drivers, the likes of NASCAR leadfoot Ryan Truex, Scott Speed, and Chris Atkinson from the WRC - so yeah, no big deal. I needed to finish P3 or higher to get to the Feature Race, but unfortunately only mustered a 5th-place finish. In order to start in the Feature Race, I would need to win outright the Last-Chance Qualifier round.

Starting in 6th place in the LCQ round and facing a heavily stacked field with Alexander Rossi, Ryan Truex, and Scott Speed, the odds were obviously against me. My chance to try and take down these professional big-name heavyweights did not result in grabbing a spot on the grid for the Feature Race; regardless, it was still fun and entertaining being able to throw down with motorsport superstars!

A total of 26 drivers competed in Round 2 of the Subaru iRX All-star Invitational. US rally cross driver and former iRacing rally cross world champion Mitchell deJong in the VRS Coanda Simsport Beetle took the win for the second straight week. Now drivers turn their attention to Round 3 of 6 at Sonoma Raceway. You can follow the whole race live, which will be broadcasted on iRacing.com/live and on Facebook at 6 PM EST/ 3PM PST.
