Timeslipes Don'tRacers Against Street Racing Takes a Giant LeapSan Diego-The parking lot at Qualcomm Stadium is packed, but the Padres aren't playing. It's 11 p.m. and the street racers have taken over the stadium grounds, launching side-by-side drags under a shimmering halogen glow. With cars lining up by twos-systems cranked while they wait-and watchful eyes all around them, this could be the scene of any number of street races around the country. But the difference here tonight is that there's no threat from the fuzz. This is 100-percent legal racing.
Right now, there are several existing legal drag racing venues in the country, more or less like the program in San Diego. Some of these venues already host nighttime drags, complete with starting lights and timing guns. And this year, SEMA's Racers Against Street Racing (RASR) wants to spread the word. RASR is hitting overdrive and its first step is revamping its Web site to promote and participate in these existing programs.
"The problem is that it's hard for the enthusiasts to get information about them," says RASR's Gregg Guenthard. "Part of what we're going to do with the RASR Web site (www.racersagainst streetracing.org) is turn it into a clearinghouse for information regarding legal race venues. We're also going to encourage our sponsors to give away product as prizes for the winners at the legal race venues."
American Honda was the first company to join the cause, signing on as a founding sponsor. Many more are expected to follow. Other cool RASR programs in the pipeline include professional racer appearances at local tracks, television coverage of various local drags, and timeslip contests on the revamped RASR Web site.
For more information on RASR or to learn how to get involved with the program, call Gregg Guenthard, director of council relations, at 909/396-0289 ext. 214, or e-mail him at greggg@sema.org. Visit www.racersagainststreetracing.org for the latest information.
RASR Joins Forces with World's Scariest Police Chases 2At the Sema Show in November, RASR announced that it would be working with Fox Interactive in the development and promotion of the sequel to World's Scariest Police Chases, the game based on Fox's popular TV show of the same name. If the new game has anything close to the addictive power of the show, be prepared to see your social life disappear like Russell's love life. And while you're playing World's Scariest, keep an eye out for RASR billboards embedded in the game.
