In the first tandem match of the best eight Imamura's 540-degree spin in the first run proved to be his undoing. In the second run Imamura pushed his Z33 right up against Ueo's hyper Corolla but it wasn't enough to overcome the spin. In the second pairing, Kumakubo's huge entry advantage over Yoshikawa's Chaser in the first run secured his march to the final four.
The third match-up featured the matching blue S15's of Kawabata and Kazama. The first run was the best of the day, with neither driver giving up anything to the other. On the second run Kazama gapped Kawabata ever so slightly and although the GReddy driver reeled in the champ quickly, his day was already done. In the last tandem of the second round Sakuma took advantage of his big turbo SR20 power to walk away from Hayashi's little Corolla.

At Fuji it was a good thing Kumakubo's Impreza was fitted with air jacks and even better that JUN's master tuner Susumu Koyama was in his pit area. This is because an exhaust manifold broke during his first run against Ueo. Alas, even the quick jacks of the Team Orange GDB and the quick hands of Koyama-san weren't enough as themanifold gave way again during the second run, handing an easy pass to Ueo.
No one was sure who to favor when Sakuma and Kazama both spun on their practice run. For the first three runs they were right on each other with big efforts from both drivers, but Sakuma's spin on the fourth run sent Kazama to the finals against Ueo.
In the first few corners of the first run it was clear that Ueo was pulling away as Kazama struggled-until Ueo's car slowed unexpectedly. Ueo's blown engine would propel Kazama onto the top spot of the podium. Kazama is one of most precise D1 drivers of all time, but on this rain-filled day there was no question as to whose driving was best. If Ueo had not succumbed to an engine failure he would have won the event. But another question looms larger over D1 than the clouds over Fuji or the what ifs surrounding an engine failure. As the skill level of the top drivers becomes so elevated, how will D1 be able to keep things fresh and exciting? Maybe rings of fire, or jousting lances? Jousting lances would be most cool.
