Tetsu's Tales
Honda Research Institute is 60 years old this year. In these 60 years, Honda surprised the world by selling motorcycles, cars, jet airplane and Asimo robot. In 1963, Honda began to sell the small sport car "S500" and small truck "T360". S500 had 492cc motor which made 40ps. T360 had 354cc motor which made 30ps. Both engines were DOHC straight-four motors. Next year, Honda developed Formula One racecar and Honda F1 won the first grand prix in Mexico in 1965. Honda's first F1 had 1500cc V12 motor, which made 220ps at 12000rpm. In 1970, United States enacted the Clean Air Act Extension of 1970. Most of car companies say we could not pass the clean air act regulation but only Honda said, "We will be able to pass it." In 1973, Honda Civic CVCC was the first to pass without using a catalytic converter (CVCC means Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion). Honda supplied CVCC skill to Toyota, Isuzu, Ford and Chrysler. At the same time, Mr. Soichiro Honda (founder of Honda) quit at the age of 66 because he thought younger engineers had better ideas. Before Mr. Honda quit, he thought of ideas while the young engineers developed the products. Mr. Honda thought his ideas were old but the public thought he was too young to quit. After Mr. Honda died in 1991, Honda developed many great things, like VTEC, Type R and scooters. There is a rumor that U.S. military is interested in Asimo. I don't know it is true or not. What is Honda's next surprise? Airplane?
New Asimo or Asimo Type R? Fuel cell vehicle? Whatever it is, I would like to say, "Please don't forget JDM culture!" www.myspace.com/oted15
