Old School: What’s Hot? What Will Be Even Hotter?

Graphics are still extremely popular, giving the owner a chance to express his/her creativity with a custom scheme or to emulate that of a touring or road-racing car. Some cars that we’ve seen have painted-on graphics such as many of the Quick 16 participants, thus making their cars look like more than just vinyl-ridden show winners.

JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) (JW, are you sure that’s what it stands for?—MP) is creeping up slowly in the show and race scenes. Originating with clear corner lights, many enthusiasts are taking the “back to the roots” route with these Japan-only hard-to-get parts. Headlights, bumpers, and taillights found in Japan have distinct differences when compared to their American counterparts. Why should you go with OEM? They fit the best without any modification, and they are styled differently than USDM parts (this may vary from car to car, and from certain manufacturers). Carbon fiber is still a popular trend, most commonly found in the form of hoods, lip spoilers, and tails.

…Girls? Well, they’ll always continue to get hotter over the years. Each show is just another blessing for all the guys out there. Sigh.

Trends come and go so fast that you don’t even get a chance to blink for one second. Just try and catch your breath. It’s impossible. Right when you think you’re on top of the game, your front is suddenly yesterday’s news. Don’t even think about it or you’ll even be more behind. This month, we’re taking a look at the current trendsetters and the possible next wave of things to come. Most of the new styles come from you, the reader (You think we have the skills to come up with them?) If you have any ideas of what you think is hot or will be the next big craze, send us pictures: Super Street, Street Styles, 6420 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90048, and tell us what you think.

Body Mods
Remember when you couldn’t find a body kit for your car? Back in 1992, only a select few offered aerokits for the import aftermarket. These days, if you’re good with your hands and can sculpt a mold, you’re in like skin. The aggressive, wide-mouthed look has been a hot ticket for quite some time, and we don’t think it’s going to stop any time soon. You’ll probably see more variations of the same kind of style, but the differences will be whatever the manufacturer decides to integrate.
Are aggressive aerokits on their way out? Probably not, but watch out, kids—it could get wilder. Shaving still remains popular, making the vehicle’s appearance look even smoother than stock. Molding body parts is catching on, but be wary of what you blend together; it can be a pain to remove later.

Engine Performance Imports running sub-10 timeslips? You betcha. Just a few years ago, only air filters and exhausts were available with barely anything else. Now hybridizing is the norm, and with a slug you can easily break 11s.
The massive 6-inch exhaust tips matched up with straight-through design mufflers are starting to calm down a bit, making room for a new generation of exhaust systems: N1-inspired exhaust canisters. These mufflers, available from a variety of manufacturers, feature the latest in exhaust technology while offering a new look.
Engine swaps have become relatively affordable, making this one an easy favorite. Honda owners are beginning to use JDM engine parts as a cheaper alternative to spending the big bucks for a rebuild, and the biggest modification, as of this printing, is the LS/VTEC conversion. Utilizing the B18A/B block for its torque and a B16A head for the VTEC, the result is what most die-hard Honda builders have been searching for: the low-end torque of a non-VTEC with the high end of a VTEC. Non-Honda owners have hope; Nissan 240SX fans are catching on with the infamous SR20DE-T swap.
Race cars, race cars, and more race cars. Tube chassis 9-second front-wheel-drive unibody or full-blown rear-wheel-drive converted. You name it, it’s been done or is in the process of being finished. The Redline Racing RWD Civic, Wicked Racing RWD Civic, and even Adam Saruwatari’s new carbon fiber chassis NSX race car are in the works. Keep your eyes peeled.

Wheels
Back in 1992, having 16-inch SSR Super Fins on your car meant you were the sh—. These days, if you aren’t rolling on 18s then your car ain’t nothin’.
Aftermarket wheels are huge when it comes to the subject of style. Three-piece wheels are still the norm, and large-diameter wheels are being put onto vehicles that just, a couple of years ago, would be considered nearly impossible without the aid of fender flares. Forged lightweight racing wheels carry a strength and a style to please all who are looking for a strong, but race/weight–friendly wheel.
