In addition to writing for Super Street, I also have the honor of writing for Car and Driver, and just as the people who work for this magazine are my friends, so too are the people who work for that one. I, and everyone at Super Street, lost a friend when Don Schroeder died in February.

A native of Syracuse, New York, and an engineering graduate of Pennsylvania's Lehigh University, Don lived his life with a ferocity that few of us can ever imagine. Besides his duties with Car and Driver, he worked hard to make his home in Detroit's Boston Edison district, a showcase of 1920s architecture, and was a founder and Vice President of Geared for Life, a Detroit-area fund-raising organization for HIV/AIDS awareness and research. He was smart, opinionated, always an engaging conversationalist, and that all came through in his writing, as well. He was a joy to argue with and a joy to read.

Those of us who had the privilege of working in the same industry as Don will miss him and so will those of us who read his work in Car and Driver. And we're all better for having had him in our industry and our lives.

Donations in Don Schroeder's name can be made to either Geared for Life, P.O. Box 21938, Detroit, MI 48221, or to a scholarship fund set up in his name. Send donations to: Lehigh University Alumni Fund in Memory of Don Schroeder, The Alumni Memorial Building, 27 Memorial Dr., W. Bethlehem, PA 18015.
