Super Lap Battle Willow Springs Qualifying Round - Blazing Up The West
Willow Springs Raceway, Rosamond, CA
Willow Springs International Raceway Park was the scene for our latest Super Lap Battle qualifying round, at a 2.5 mile-long track known for being the fastest track in the West with cars reaching speeds of up to 120 mph. With this track being so quick, aero becomes extremely important and teams like the BC/C-West/Design Craft Honda S2000 and World Racing's Scion tC can really shine on this course.In the Unlimited class, we had last year's record holder the BC/C-West S2000, driven by Tyler McQuarrie, setting up to go head-to-head with Chris Rado in his Scion tC. Unfortunately, due to some wiring issues Rado wasn't able to get his car running that weekend. Bergonholtz Racing brought out their brand new, dual-purpose drift/time attack Mazda RX-8 to put a few shakedown runs in, but after a few laps had to retire due to mechanical issues. Even without any other contenders to go against, Tyler McQuarrie took the S2000 to a new record-breaking time of 1:22.228, besting his time of last year by a full second. In the Limited class, JC Meynet in his Harmon Motive-built Subaru STI stepped it up to break the old Limited record with a time of 1:27.119.With time attack becoming more popular than ever, the competition within the street class cars became increasingly fierce. Normally we see an AWD taking the overall win but this time Autowave's 1000 hp Acura NSX, driven by Messely Young, took the win with a 1:32.036. Battling it out for second and third place was former Sport Compact Car editor Joey Leh's Mitsubishi Evo 9, driven by Russ Warr, against the infamous Tarzan Yamada in a '08 Subaru STI. Both cars, in fact, had very little done; Joey's car was still running a stock turbo with just a K&N drop-in filter and Tarzan's STI had some basic bolt-ons with a Crawford ECU tune. At the end of the day Russ was able to get a 1:34.128 in Joey's Evo to Tarzan's 1:37.572. With us being halfsway through the season and with more records breaking at each passing event, it's going to be exciting to see what people do at this year's Finals on November 11th at Buttonwillow Raceway.
