As if being a Rally America champ, multi-X Games gold medalist and the first to double-backflip on a motorcycle wasn't enough to say "I'm crazy" (or talented) enough, Travis Pastrana upped his own ante this past New Year's Eve at Red Bull's No Limits party by setting a new world record for a ramp-to-ramp car jump by driving his Vermont SportsCar-rally-prepped Subaru STI off Long Beach's Pine Street Pier a total of 269 feet, onto a floating (but anchored) ship in front of a crowd of over 20,000. What exactly did Pastrana need from his STI to break the previous record set of 171 feet by his rally teammate, Ken Block? Vermont SportsCar, the team that preps his rally cars, built two identical STIs (one being back-up) from stock form and outfitted them with plenty of suspension and safety equipment to handle the jump and landing. The team also installed a KAPS 5-speed dog-gearbox and tuned the car with a MoTeC M880 so it could reach the optimum speed it needed to hit in order to make the jump correctly. Travis made it safely, but his passenger side didn't as he hit the end of the ship to stop the car from doing any real major damage. After the nightlong celebration and debauchery with our friends at Subaru, we had to think, "How is he going to top this one?" Time will only tell...
