Darren McNamarra in his Saturn takes second place in Vegas.

There are two things we like about round six of Formula D. First, it’s the second to last round of the season, meaning all the drivers are pushing harder to win making the competition more entertaining for us to watch. And the second thing… Well, it’s in Vegas. If you’re not intoxicated, yelling “I love Afrojack!” like I do at XS and getting into trouble, you’re doing something wrong. So before we let things really get out of hand, we headed to Las Vegas Motor Speedway to get some work done as well as our monthly dose of burnt rubber and spent race fuel.

Dai Yoshihara driving his V8-powered Nissan S13 had a comfortable lead over the field before the action started. But there were 31 other drivers ready to take him out so things were going to get ugly…

The battles in Vegas started out with upset after upset. In the Top 16, many favorites were knocked out including Chris Forsberg, Vaughn Gittin Jr and Justin Pawlak. Dai also fell early against Toshiki Yoshioka in a “one more time” match missing the Top 8 as well.

When the dust settled, the last man standing was Rhys Millen driving his Hyundai Genesis Coupe. It was his first podium finish this year, let alone first place. Darren McNamara driving his Saturn Sky was the runner-up and Matt Powers placed third.

The battle in Sin City always goes down as one of the most exciting Formula D events of the year and the surprises we saw were no exception. Now going into the last round in Irwindale, the competition is as stiff as our drinks with five drivers within 52 points of each other. Who will be the ’11 champion? We’d put our money on the points leader, Dai, or second-ranked Justin Pawlak—both thirsty for their first championship. But crap! We lost all our money in Vegas…
