Several years ago, we’d say you were crazy if you went to Vegas between the months of May and September. The temperature rarely dips below 95° and there isn’t shit to do except sit in a casino and gamble your life savings away. But in the last ten years, Sin City has earned the title as one of the best places in the world for anyone who likes the word ‘fun’. Pool parties, girls in bikinis, nightclubs, Hangover-style bachelor parties, EDC…the list goes on and on. And since 2008, Formula D was added into the mix. Need we saymore?
This past August, the Vegas event was nothing short of a wild one. To make it more challenging from last year, the staff designed a new course for the 55 participating drivers. Qualifying started Friday and only the top 32 could move on. Fredric Aasbo and his Scion tC qualified first while Rhys Millen and his Hyundai came in second. While Rhys was the defending Vegas champ from 2011, all eyes were on Mustang driver Vaughn Gittin Jr. as he already won the last two rounds back-to-back. He qualified fifth with high hopes of a hat trick.
Come game time, the spotlight settled on the top two qualifiers. Every match for Aasbo was a thriller as he defeated favorites like Chris Forsberg, Dai Yoshihara, Tyler McQuarrie and lastly Gittin Jr. in the final four. Rhys also had his share of tough bouts knocking out Daigo Saito. But in the end, Aasbo and Millen faced off. Aasbo damaged his tC on the first run which made it difficult for him to bounce back. Mr. Millen stayed consistent in the second run and stood victorious winning his second consecutive Las Vegas event.
Going into the final round, the championship is still up for grabs as seven drivers can logistically win. Gittin’s up by 25 points but it’s too close to put our money on anyone.
