1991 Nissan 240SX N/A - That Guy

Gary Narusawa performs the most sacrilegious act possible to the SR20DET, but we never expected this...

With such a unique setup for the SR20, Gary included a few more modifications to give it some power, like an Unorthodox crank pulley, upper pulleys from GReddy, an A'PEXi 0.8mm head gasket, and a 100-shot direct-port nitrous system from Nitrous Express. A stock KA24DE transmission was used, but equipped with the SR20DET bellhousing so that it could be mated to the SR20 block. Gary also put in a Nismo clutch, a Fidanza flywheel for quicker revs, and a Nismo limited-slip so both wheels hook up under full lock. He estimates that the car is good for at least 190 hp without the juice, which, if you compare it with a stock SR20DET, isn't too far removed. Even going for a ride, you can clearly tell it's got more kick.

But if you thought the engine was cool, then we're sure you'll dig the S13 Silvia front end and the custom body treatment Gary applied to the rear of his 240. After fitting on a Bomex front bumper, he molded the taillights from a R32 Skyline to the back end, then had the car painted Dupont Nogaro Blue. He dropped the chassis slightly with Ground Control coilovers and JDM KYB Buzz Spec struts, then placed 17x8 and 17x9 Racing Hart Type Cs (the originals!) for a nice, but classic look. Gary tightened up the chassis by bolting a Cusco strut brace to the front shock towers while down below he installed Nismo tension rod bushings in place of the factory rubber. The puny front brakes were given the ever-popular Z32 caliper upgrade, which also includes Porterfield R4-S pads for extra bite. And inside, Gary didn't need anything flashy, which explains why he only added factory S14 seats, a Sparco steering wheel, a Nismo shift knob, and the NX gauge and nitrous controller he custom mounted to the center console. If you look closely at the gauge cluster, you'll see yet another Gary one-off mod, an LED that lights up once the nitrous has been activated. He also used graphics from an XMODS graphics sheet so the blue light special would have that NX-powered finishing touch.

In a lot of ways, Gary is that kind of guy you'd never notice--being that he's so quiet and unassuming--and maybe that's what makes him so unique. He's that guy who knows everything about cars and is the one we all stand around while he's working in an engine bay, just so we'll learn a thing or two. A car guy's car guy, if you will. To put it simply, Gary's got the gift of building cars, which he says, "is not always about speed and power; it's really a form of art. What's more important is that one explores and expresses new ideas rather than doing what's conventional." Clearly, Gary's got that statement down just right.
