Nobody on our staff has owned or ever will own a Honda S2000. That's not a jab at Honda's one and only front-engined rear-wheel-drive sports car. Despite the feminine convertible factor, the car is still quite sexy. We know, it seems like we bash (no pun intended) on the S2K more than we should. But it's the only drift-capable Honda available to us peons. Plus it's armed withthe all-mighty 240hp F20 motor. So the little roadster does deserve respect. And we're just talking about it in stock form. Those who take the S2K and concoct their own masterpiece out of it are in a league of their own. Take Jason Alvarado's green machine, for example. What you see definitely isn't the norm.
Let us set the scene for you. It's spring break and we're on South Padre Island, TX for our world-famous Tuner Bash car show. OK. Maybe it's not world famous, but a grip of people know about it. But our popularity is hardly important when there are half-naked hotties strutting around our show. It wasn't the typical hot and humid weather we were expecting. The sun was out, but there was a cool breeze to mend our hung-over souls. In the sea of cars, we spotted something eye-scorchingingly bright tucked in the corner right under the Toyo Tires awning. It was Jason Alvarado's Honda S2000.
There's no doubt that we're not the only ones who noticed his car. You'd have to be blind to miss the House of Kolors Kandy Lime Gold paintjob with a Planet Green basecoat. Damn. That's a mouthful just to type, much less to try and say out loud five times straight. But it was more than just the flashy paint that made Jason's car our pick for Best of the Bash. The whole chassis of his S2K wasreworked, starting with a phattening-upcourtesy of a molded in Mastergrade widebody kit. Complements from the same manufacturer include a front lip, rear diffuser, and eyelids, all in carbon fiber. The door handles, antenna, emblems and trunk lid were shaved for that smooth-as-Otis'-head look. Finishing the exterior off are smoked head and taillights and a Seibon carbon fiber hood.
With a Mugen steering wheel and Corbeau A3 racing seats, this S2K's interior is no less extravagant than its exterior. Then comes the ICE, which includes more electronics than any of us have in our houses. Seriously, a 15-inch TV screen and camera molded to the trunk lid, a couple of JL Audio woofers and amps, then a PS2 and Pioneer head unit. That's way beyond anything we could ever put together with Nads' 8-track and 6x9 enclosures.
The engine was given a slight performance makeover as well, with an AEM intake and A'PEXi World Sport exhaust. But when your car's this fixed up and you're driving it on the street, who the hell wants to F anything up by racing it? We'd be more concerned with how far out to park at the mall than if we could spank an EK Civic on the freeway. Plus it'd take at least a supercharger and possibly some laughing gas to get the 19-inch iForged wheels to light up the Toyo rubbers.
It's pretty evident that Jason's S2K isn't the run of the mill roadster that you see attrack events. It'd be a shame to see all the time, money, and effort get put to an end witha nasty spill on a circuit. This S2K is ashowstopper, and that's a good thing in this case. Some might argue that Jason's car should be raced, but until they open their own shop and build their own S2K, their point has yet to be proven.
