Mazda RX 7 FD3S Genki 7 - Bow In The Presence Of Greatness
Re Amemiya Proves Once Again That The FD RX-7 Is Alive And Kickin'
Since the Genki 7 will be getting beat on by Amemiya-san, the handling was set up with specially valved Quantum RS adjustable dampers coupled with Swift springs. These join the GReddy front strut brace as well as the underbody bracing done by RE Amemiya. On top of the clutch, ORC supplied their latest 4-pot front brake kit. The gold-anodized calipers are joined by floating 2-piece slotted rotors while the rear is left standard, but dressed up with RE Amemiya ORC-look plastic caliper covers. A very cheap alternative to an expensive brake kit, but not quite as good!
Open the doors of the Genki 7 and the blue theme of the body is continued inside with a fully decked out interior. The dark blue velvet-like finish is obtained by applying an adhesive to the surfaces and then firing statically charged nylon fibers on to it, which then attach and arrange themselves into a fine and smooth finish. This is the same technique as used on rally car dashboards, mainly done to avoid reflections onto the windscreen. The Genki 7 sports the treatment on the dashboard, transmission tunnel trim, pillars, headliner, door trim and the whole rear hatch area. Even the center part of the stock steering wheel is finished off with the blue velvety treatment. As Ken says, this is something pretty new on tuned machinery in Japan and something that we will be seeing a lot more of in the future. Blue Bride Low Max bucket seats were chosen to match the interior while RE Amemiya white and chrome instrumentation was fitted to the carbon-look dash. A triplet of Defi gauges are fitted on the passenger air-bag cover while the GReddy e-01 boost controller is neatly hidden away in the glove box. The Clarion MD/CD head unit completes what has to be one of the freshest looking interiors to date.
Amemiya-san has, without a doubt, proven that he is still the master rotary tuner he has always been. Yet at the same time he shows that the FD3S body can still be used to create exceptionally innovative designs. His son, Ken says, "My father will never run out of ideas of what to do next with the RX-7." We wouldn't have it any other way.
