High Speed Pursuit - 1993 Toyota Supra JZA80

No Matter How Fast You Run, This Top Fuel Supra Will Catch You

Not long ago I was driving on the freeway, happily boosting my 240SX, when something struck me as being very peculiar. On the shoulder, there was a raggedy pickup getting busted, probably for dropping farm animals out of the back. That's not the crazy part. I mean, that's just business as usual in the 909. What freaked me out was that the cop who pulled over this freak was leaning smugly on the hood of his Z28 Camaro police car. I've had a couple of run-ins with meathead musclecar owners and they've all resulted in my favor. I don't think I would be so fortunate against this one.

After seeing so many freeway chases on the news lately, I started imagining how one involving him and I would end up. Instead of cruising at 35mph swerving in and out of lanes on the freeway, we'd both be at full throttle hitting triple-digit speeds wondering who would run out of gas first. Now that'd be some must-see TV right there, boy.

My mind continued to wander so I tried to think if there was a car out there that could put an end to hot-pursuit chases completely. Then it came to me: the Top Fuel JZA80 Supra owned by a cop, nameless for obvious reasons, in Mie, Japan.

There's no need for sirens and lights-just seeing this Top Fuel signature-white brute in the rearview mirror is enough to freak the hell out of law dodgers, forcing them to cry like babies and pull over. Regardless of the Trial Zelda wheels, the car squats low and stiff to the ground courtesy of a Quantum damper kit. The Bomex front bumper is ready to swallow anything in its path, digest it through the Top Secret side skirts, and defecate whatever is left out the AB Flug rear wing, with TRD's hood and the Trial rear skirt serving as digestive aids. Calling it aggressive would be a major understatement seeing that it would only take seconds for it to remind you of your place on the food chain.

If appearance isn't enough to freak out criminals, then the contents of the engine bay certainly will. There's no need for subtlety when there's a 2JZ-GTE motor capable of pushing out damn near 1,000hp on your side. The first things to pop out are the GReddy T88H single turbo and manifold, custom intake manifold, and EVC Pro stepping motor. They couldn't be more obvious if they jumped out and slapped you upside the head.

Going deeper into the powerplant, you'll find that everything in the bottom end from the pistons to the crank have been reworked to ensure longevity. Even the head gets a custom port and polish treatment in order to extract every ounce of power available. Additional fuel is supplied via twin Bosch fuel pumps and a Nismo Type C regulator.

As you might have guessed already, fuel management is dictated by the HKS F-Con V Pro. Once everything is dialed in, try running from 889ps (862hp) and 647lb-ft of torque. We wish you unlawful citizens the best of luck in the pursuit because the fastest recorded time for this Supra on the 400-meter dragstrip is 10.81 @ 222km/h (137mph). Even with the Holliger six-speed tranny and ATS 1.5-way limited-slip differential, there's definitely loss of traction present. That's because the owner refuses to run drag slicks on the car. It's street tires or nothing for this cop. Like we said, good luck.

In case you don't happen to get a glance of what's inside, there isn't much. Only one Recaro seat, a few HKS gauges, and a full rollcage that you can be handcuffed to. Even with precise tunage from Hirano-san and Top Fuel, changes in weather conditions can adversely affect the air/fuel mixture. A dash-mounted Nekko A/F Analyzer warns the nice officer if the car starts running too lean for its own good.

True, a cop car like this will take away from many boring hours of low-speed police chases. It also makes barricades, spikes, and battering rams obsolete, but at least it makes scofflaws think twice before putting innocent bystanders at risk. Only the truly ignorant would even attempt to get away.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your POV), we're not in Mie and the po-pos on this side of the globe don't have Top Fuel building their cars. I'm gonna play it safe and obey all traffic laws from here on out. Luckily, this is a personal car and the owner doesn't use it to chase down bad guys. Lucky for you, that is.
