The only thing that readers want to read about, according to the focus group, is everything about the car, given they can actually read and know the difference between a computer mouse and an automobile. The one most important takeaway from this directive, however, is the fact that they even needed to figure this out in the first place. Because it's really not about what our readers read, but what they actually want to read. One car that can undoubtedly make the novice reader turn into a venerable James Joyce is the FC3S, better known to common folk as the Mazda RX-7, from the second generation.
This custom blue-gold painted 1990 RX-7 is owned by Kris Robb, a refrigeration engineer from the outskirts of Christchurch, New Zealand. According to reports he's a casual dresser, preferring the safe confines of a Gap store as opposed to a hypebeast-friendly BAPE store. Let's focus on the ride itself: According to Kris, it took him all of two years to complete this project, using every available weekend to make sure every part met the New Zealander standard for tuned rides, which, according to Peter Jackson, is "pretty f'n major, bro." The previous vehicles Kris has owned serves a long list, filled with major hitters of the past and beyond: TE71 Toyota Levin, Mazda RX-3 sedan with a 13B turbo, Toyota Corolla SR coupe, Corolla DX and Mitsubishi Evolution V RS. It's safe to say that Kris is a veteran with a taste for the classics, and this RX-7 seems to be the newest ride he owns because it was at least made in the '90s.
The most unique feature of his RX-7 is the 13B RE Cosmo intake and custom inlet. It's the most stunning part under the carbon-fiber vented hood. The 13B, if you didn't already know, is a rotary engine, which means there are as many pistons in it as there are Eastern Peruvian Capuchin monkeys inside your underwear-hopefully none. This 13B features a full rebalancing of all its internal parts with new rotor housings and a 3mm Mazda race apex seals. It's ported and polished, and dowelled for extra strength, all of which guarantees that this motor doesn't blow up into the sky when the gas pedal hits the floor. It also makes sure it pulls every horsepower available to finish at the races, which would be hard if Kris didn't install the most vital part of the engine bay, a Turbonetics T66 turbocharger. The combination of a GReddy blow-off valve and wastegate with the turbo and custom-made intercooler pipes works to boost the 13B into the 19psi territory, creating a dyno-proven 481rwhp. "We're actually disappointed in the horsepower numbers," Kris explained, "We know we can retune this machine to make at least 550rwhp."
The promise of such high horsepower will be at least handled well since Kris made sure the driveline is in check with whatever he throws at it. Kris added a rebuilt '90 Series 5 RX-7 transmission with a 4.1:1 Cusco 1.5 way LSD, C's short shifter kit and a Quarter Master ceramic twin-plate clutch. All of which helps transfer the power to the 19-inch Konig Crosshairs wheels, which lay out 215 mm of Nankang rubber in the front and 235 mm in the rear. The added bonus is that these tires and wheels are controlled by a suspension system that features D2 36-way adjustable coilovers, Whiteline adjustable stabilzer bars and Energy Suspension bushings. It's definitely a stiff ride, but it will take you to from Point A to Point B faster than you can say Kiwi Kakapo.
Inside this FC is equally stunning as the outside and remarkably beautiful as the seam welded engine bay, spotlighted by a set of Recaro reclinable race seats and black vinyl and charcoal suede upholstery. The dash is enhanced by the set of Autometer Phantom series gauges, Momo Millennium steering wheel, and custom-made stereo console, color matched to the exterior. Outside features smoothed body lines, highlighted by the removal of the spoiler. It features a genuine GP Sports full body kit, shaved locks and aerials and the custom fuel door.
Kris' RX-7 is definitely something to behold, whether it's in New Zealand or in the States. It makes us want to learn everything Kiwi, from the humpback reverse whale with triple sow cow breaststroke to Peter Jackson movies, nocturnal parrots and the Flight of the Conchords, which I failed to implement earlier in the article.
