The GT-R wasn't just a car; it was the vehicle that signified that Japan could build a kick-ass sports car. The Hakosuka exemplifies everything that has become synonymous with Japanese sports cars to this day: twin cams, four valves per cylinder, low displacement, high revs, light weight and superior handling! The Japanese almost immediately fell in love with the Skyline and the rest, as they say, is history.
There's no doubt in my mind that the GT-R changed not only Japan's opinion of what a JDM sports car was but also the rest of the world's. Squeezing every ounce of power from a small displacement NA motor is still being taken to the extreme today. Without the S20 we may not have our SR20s, 4AGs, B16s, K20s, RB26s, 2JZs or any of the infamous DOHC JDM power plants. If you ever get the rare opportunity to see a real box Skyline 2000 GT-R in person make sure to go up and appreciate it. You might even think to yourself, "Hakosuka GT-R is my hero too!"
