To our loyal Turbo readers the fourth generation turbo Toyota Supra is a very familiar face. The MkIV Supra packs more power potential than almost any other U.S. factory turbocharged car of recent years; and, it's packed with a stout six-speed transmission, the bulletproof twin-turbocharged 2JZ-GTE six-cylinder engine and a proper rear-wheel drive setup. Toyota's twin-turbo jewel is so potent that enthusiasts have been stuffing them into SC300s, AE86 Corollas and 240Zs - no matter the cost.
The key to the cult-like following of the 2JZ-GTE and the Supra is four simple numbers. More than a handful of Supra owners have pushed their two-door monsters past the magical 1000whp mark on gasoline, and more owners than you can count have rocketed into the 600 to 800whp range. Unable to maintain traction during dyno runs, these beastly Supras have cemented their place as one of the tuning world's heaviest hitters. But at what cost?
Do massive fuel injectors and monstrous turbochargers make for reliable transportation? When you factor in the cost of parts, maintenance, drivability and, of course, the cost of rear tires, you might just pass on a 1,300whp Supra. While we are all about big dyno numbers in the U.S., many Supra tuners in Japan focus instead on streetable daily drivers. What people forget is that 500 hp, even in a Supra, is still a hell of a lot of power and excitement for the driver.
This JZA80 Japanese Toyota Supra RZ-S by JDM tuner Auto Boss Produce, now tuned to deliver 493 hp at 18.5 psi, retains many of the strongest factory components and is the perfect example of a powerful, daily driven MkIV Supra. The 2JZ-GTE engine is completely stock inside, right down to the camshafts and pistons. Proven time after time to stand up to even higher power levels than this car puts out, the turbo engine was rightfully left alone by Auto Produce Boss.
Outside, however, the turbocharger system has been reworked and upgraded for both power and efficiency. Twin HKS GTSS turbochargers, sourced from a Skyline GT-R RB26DETT application, were placed using an Auto Produce Boss stainless-steel tubular exhaust manifold. The intake piping for both HKS snails was custom fabricated by Boss.
From the turbochargers, exhaust gases flow into a Boss 80mm downpipe and through a Boss high-flow catalytic converter. Yes, that's right, a cat. This is designed to be a true streetcar, remember? Following a slight cleaning, the final exit for the gases is the Boss 90mm titanium exhaust system. Notably, the owner of AP Boss personally welds each of these exhaust systems himself to ensure that every single one is of the utmost quality. Back to the cold side of things, Boss-fabricated piping feeds a front-mount HKS intercooler, which spits directly into the throttle.
Providing reliable cooling and solid operation is a wide combination of upgrades. The radiator has been changed out for a SARD aluminum unit, Boss overflow tank and SARD high-pressure radiator cap. Keeping oil temperatures in check is courtesy of the addition of a Trust oil cooler kit. Attention has also been paid to the delivery of fuel, an important factor for any turbo engine. A SARD fuel pump feeds gallon after gallon of Japanese premium pump gas to the Boss 800cc/min fuel injectors. Tied together with a HKS F-Con V Pro engine management system, this Supra has a wider and stronger powerband than stock and has been custom tuned by Auto Produce Boss for street use.
Keeping in touch with the streetcar theme, Auto Produce Boss went with just a few minor changes on the interior. The stock seats have been tossed for a pair of Bride Brix reclineable seats fit with Prodrive four-point safety harnesses. Displaying a rare nod toward entertainment for Auto Boss Produce versus outright performance, this Supra has been fit with a Kenwood DVD receiver and an LCD flip-out screen.
The suspension has been worked over as well, a wise choice given the Supra's high weight and large size. Prodrive 30-position adjustable coilovers rest at all four corners, working in partnership with stock sway bars. The Prodrive units allow the driver to choose between a soft comfortable ride, or a harder, edgier setup with just a turn of a knob. Providing the end grip is Bridgestone's Potenza 540S tires, wrapped around 18-inch forged monoblock aluminum Prodrive GC-05F wheels. Produced by Rays Engineering, the Prodrive wheels are lightweight and provide adequate clearance for the Brembo four-piston brake calipers, installed by AP Boss.
For the ultimate in stealth, you'd think that this Supra's body would be left completely factory stock. Auto Produce Boss is cognizant, however, that most of us like to ride in style. The key then was to pick aerodynamics that were clean, simple, and effective. Ridox, founded by Super GT and D1GP superstar driver Manabu Orido, is the company behind the subtle carbon-fiber kit attached to this Supra. Accenting the Toyota's natural lines without upsetting any design elements, this Ridox kit is perfect for any street MkIV. Hell, remove the SARD carbon wing and we bet this Supra could be driven daily without any unwanted police intervention.
Having built an MkIV Toyota Supra that's crazy, but not too crazy, Auto Produce Boss has shown us that owning a fun rear-wheel drive turbo car doesn't have to be ridiculous or expensive. By sticking with the strengths of your car, it's possible to build a daily driver that you can be proud of. AP Boss struck the perfect balance here. Now if someone could just figure out how to make a 1,500whp, 30mpg, $12K Supra...
